Jokes on them... I turn the screen off, slap on a pair of noise cancelling headphones, and put on my sleeping mask when I'm on a plane.

AnotherDirtyAnglo ,

It's called Lupron, it's a hormone blocker. It's used for chemical castration of pedophiles, and to put women into menopause.

The side effects make it... A bigger burden than whacking off into a sock.

Having said that...

Ask yourself why it is that you can't be happy. And while money isn't the secret to happiness, the lack of it can be pretty fucking depressing.

Next steps after the bear

As has been discussed already here in this community, the key takeaway from the bear hypothetical is that it is an opportunity to truly listen to the lived experiences of women under patriarchal systems. I encourage "first response" to the bear discussion to head back to this post, as I am looking for discussion kind of after...

Story time...

On the way home from work I stepped off a bus and turned in the direction of home. A young woman who was a few steps ahead of me was being verbally harassed with overtly sexual language by a man. I stepped between them, facing the dude, and told him to fuck off and walk away. Some words were exchanged, and eventually he turned around and walked away. I watch him for a minute or two, then turned around and walked home. The woman he was harassing was long gone.

When I got home and relayed this story to my girlfriend, she said this sort of interaction was COMMON. She'd never mentioned it in the nearly 10 years we'd been dating. It was normal to her. My response was "What the actual fuck? That's bullshit." But it was her reality, and the reality of the woman I saw, and probably dozens or hundreds more, every day.

We collectively need to do better. We need to stop doing it ourselves, and stop our friends, family, co-workers, acquaintances, and even strangers from doing it. We need to raise the average and be better.

I know more than one of these men that women would rather not take a chance with... The JR/AT/JP/TradWife/dudebro types. When I asked my girlfriend about the choices, she chose 'bear' immediately, and specifically called out someone we knew, saying, "Would YOU want me to encounter <dudebro> in the forest if I didn't know him?" And she was right -- I'd prefer she choose the bear...

And that's tragically fucking sad that someone I know is so far down the 'dudebro' rabbit hole that I wouldn't leave my GF alone with him in a compromised position.

AnotherDirtyAnglo ,

The solution to this problem is to be 'better than average' and bring up the average by leading by example.

AnotherDirtyAnglo ,
  1. Bears are omnivores and mostly eat plants/seeds/berries.

  2. Few bears hunt mammals (but we've all seen photos of them hunting fish) but when they do, they hunt young deer/elk/moose, and are more likely to scavenge winter kills or fresh kills made by others (wolves/big cats/etc.).

Dude, get some therapy. The world isn't as harsh and bleak as you imply, and if your life experience hasn't already shown you that, you need to stop throwing yourself a pity party and start working on getting better so you can enjoy your life.

AnotherDirtyAnglo ,

You've got 25 downvotes. Take the hint: Your 'hot take' is crap, and you should work on getting better.

All men have had shitty things happen to them. All of us have been treated unfairly. How we pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off matters.

My old PMG3 (beige, the first one) came with a Zip drive. I still have that machine, and the Zip drive in it still works.

I've watched a company load up 2PB of data into a tape library, have them stack it full of bubblewrap, then roll it onto the back of a truck with the tires deflated for a softer ride, then driven across town to a new datacentre at 3am on a Sunday.

Effective data rate: 1PB per hour.

AnotherDirtyAnglo ,

Because it's obvious to everyone who isn't shitty.

AnotherDirtyAnglo ,

Yes, cell towers should all be nationalized, then anyone can compete on service and price, not on coverage. Instantly everyone gets better coverage in more places, with more bandwidth because they can get service from any tower. Instantly, prices hit rock bottom because there's no barrier to entry.

AnotherDirtyAnglo ,

Yes... Let's re-open this bucket of bullshit. When they left for Ottawa, they had a written declaration and were planning on overthrowing the democratically elected government with some ridiculously ignorant idea for dissolving parliament and placing themselves in control.

This is too stupid to not be plain old grift.

AnotherDirtyAnglo ,

but I bet the train is still more comfortable

It's not. In business class, you're immediately behind the engine -- you get to hear it blast the horn multiple times at every crossing.

And no matter which class you're in, the freight trains have beat the piss out of almost every set of tracks, so that when you're at speed, it just about knocks your fillings out -- nevermind the idea of actually getting any work done on paper or laptop because of the constant motion.

Your best bet is to get high/drunk before you get on the train and sleep through it.

AnotherDirtyAnglo ,

There are no dedicated tracks for passengers trains outside major cities. If you travel between Quebec City and Windsor on Via Rail, you're almost exclusively on freight tracks. Between Montreal and Kingston is like being shaken left and right non-stop for nearly two hours. Impossible to read a book / tablet / phone, type on a laptop -- eating and drinking is difficult.

Meanwhile, the TGV/ICE trains move at over 300km/h, and the speed & motion are imperceptable, even on curves.

Not a physicist, merely a science enthusiast with a high school science education.

My understanding is that we're having a hard enough time smashing hydrogen together into helium (and actually getting back more energy than we put into the process) that making specific isotopes of heavier elements with the current state of technology is between 'extraordinarily unlikely' and 'impossible'. We would have to manage to get past Helium and then on to Lithium, Beryllium, and Boron to get to Carbon -- I imagine the amount of energy required to produce even just a few C12 atoms would be off the charts.

Why not just build tiny homes? Built to code, 200sqft, well insulated, power, running water, and phone/internet, close to public transit. A fixed address with access to a social worker and a nurse on site, and the ability to get back up on their feet.

The idea would be to give people something between 'tent' and 'apartment' as transitional housing. Nobody freezes to death, nobody gets caught in the rain and loses everything they own. A community centre for socializing / education / laundry / showers, etc. There's a ton of unused / underutilized lots in most cities - buildings ready for demolition, behind on taxes, and better used to deal with the housing crisis.

This isn't rocket surgery. Someone please take this idea and run with it!
