don't mind me. i'm just wordlessly screaming in existential agony and rage reading this.

@thoughtpunks Daaayum! Article sure needed mention of research boards, ethics panels and good ol' dissenting or contrasting viewpoints, eh? Reminds me of walking into a high school class to substitute several years ago and being lucky to see the film Gattaca assigned as a study in bioethics.

I'm seeing the word come up in a bunch of unrelated posts, so what does "agency" mean to you in a #TTRPG or broader #TabletopGaming context?

Bonus: If there's a contrast from common usage, how would you describe "agency" as commonly used by others?

Acantigue ,
@Acantigue@dice.camp avatar

@thoughtpunks For starters, I want to put aspects and scales of a ttrpg on an autonomy spectrum (among other spectra) with referee/GM fiat on one end and player(s) agency on the other. Different scales and aspects could range from world building and campaign arcs down to interpretation of a rule or lack of enough of a role. It gets more complex and interesting when ttrpgs are like Belonging Outside Belonging (No Dice, No Masters) or are designed to not have a GM. I bristle at simple fiat.

With the recent Northern Lights occurrence, I'm #worldbuilding thinking about all the the weird beautiful stuff aberrant Aurora Borealis could represent in #TTRPG settings and games. What kind of amazing discoveries does it hold? What terrifying truths hide behind its beauty?

    Oh wow, for every TTRPG I remember fondly that holds up there are at least two that... uh... do not. Some are just a bit clunky now but a lot of them I'd never run or play again. What's your experience?

    @thoughtpunks Same, but easy to and so many choices for hacking and splicing!

    While the five root forms are an arbitrary chunking/distillation of a complex design issue, they're a useful set of chunks for eyeing centrality.

    Just as higher-trust adventures tend to cluster multiple problems, higher-trust problems tend to cluster multiple "forms."

    The Huzrael in Toast, designed in part to be an example, are simultaneously Imperiled, Misplaced, and Failing.

    Three of their number (Hirash, Jaina and optionally Amrad) embody At-Odds and/or Harmful.

    @LeviKornelsen Edward Said and his works and impact are critical (theory)! Pretty essential works. The printed conversations with Eqbal Ahmad are great discourse, too.

    Tonight a #TTRPG AP independent of me ran one of my small silly games. It was everything I could have wanted and more! Absolutely amazing people. Then the channel host says they will defo run more Thought Punks games at some point. And the GM buys a bunch of my games.

    💝IN HEAVEN!💝

    I don't need any awards. This right here is my dream. Really lifted me up when I was feeling down and gave me renewed spoons to work on our stuff. I needed this.

    @LeviKornelsen A ten meter cruelly fashioned tower of rock and mud wherein is housed a sentient, humanoid shaped ooze half made of silicoid teeth. It makes a rough gesture of hospitality, but is also of ill intent because of its growing bone art collection. The tower has been slowly growing, too.

    One of the first #TTRPG I played was #Aftermath, in a homebrew run incorporating a lot of Operation Morpheus.

    So, I'll always have a soft spot for the game. But, with those nostalgia-goggles acknowledged, I only knew the game from the player perspective, for decades. Never cracked open a book, never owned a set until years later.

    These days I re-read it every couple of years, because it's ALL there. Aftermath! knew what it was promising, and cared about helping the GM and Players deliver.

    Acantigue ,
    @Acantigue@dice.camp avatar

    @SJohnRoss The Morrow Project was my Aftermath. We barely played, but my design prep felt aaamazing. I put a big ol' pre-apocalyptic base under Porcupine Mountain in Michigan's (USA) Upper Peninsula.

    @Acantigue@dice.camp avatar

    @SJohnRoss That's great! And judging by first edition MP ruleset, I think I recall Aftermath being the more playable. Certainly more likely, lol.

    I like the novel Dune more than I do LotR, and I think the latest Dune adaptation (both movies taken as a whole) are excellent, and mostly faithful to the book.

    But the LotR movies, while admittedly taking a lot of liberties, are so monumental and innovative that they still eclipse the cinematic Dune.

    That said, Zendaya probably deserves a nomination next year, for playing Chani in part 2.

    Acantigue ,
    @Acantigue@dice.camp avatar

    @SJohnRoss @Lane That's cool! I could knock out LotR but had to restart Dune. Love them all.

    Well, I now have an odd new phone - the Teracube 2e. Which got my attention because it's inexpensive, works with the e/os easy installer, and has a headphone jack. Also it's got some long-lifespan environmental cred and a replaceable battery (!), which is cool.

    I put in e/os with the launcher, aaaand: 45 minutes, dead simple.

    And now, the attempt to get all my main needs without ever connecting to Google (the option to do so is there if I can't, but I'm going to try not to).
