Other than the fediverse support, are there any other differences from last year?

Chiquita found liable by U.S. jury for killings by Colombian terrorists ( www.msn.com )

Chiquita Brands was ordered Monday by a Florida jury to pay $38.3 million to the families of eight people killed by a right-wing paramilitary group in Colombia, which the banana grower had funded for years during that country's violent civil war....

Every time it caused a coup that we know about.

Reading the quotes from Ashe reminds me of some of the cops who plant evidence at crime scenes: they’re convinced they’ve already got the right suspect, and manufacturing evidence is just a convenient shortcut for persuading everyone else of their version of the truth.

Death Valley is hotter than the river of molten lava outside Grindavik in Iceland?

Let me guess—she heard they just got a new contract to produce more Jewish space lasers.

It can mislead visitors about the severity of climate change... and it can impact the local ecosystem, if there are organisms around the waterfall that depend on there being a dry season each year.

AbouBenAdhem ,

Most likely the dry season is naturally occurring, but the length and severity are affected by climate change.

I agree that the focus needs to be on cutting emissions, and I share the concern for unintended consequences. But I don’t know if that concern justifies shutting down an experiment that would help identify those consequences.

It’s a feature, not a bug: if he claimed to know how it worked, they wouldn’t be able to sell it as a scapegoat for indefensible business decisions.

AbouBenAdhem ,

we know from paintings this is what it looked like

Do we, though? The article says “warriors were prominently featured in the Mycenaean art with numerous depictions showing their helmets, swords, spears, bows, and arrows in great detail. Armors, however, were mysteriously absent.”

Netanyahu and Putin are both waiting for Trump ( www.washingtonpost.com )

Netanyahu reportedly met this month with three foreign policy envoys working with former president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump — who could yet win the election despite being convicted Thursday on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in his New York state hush money case....

AbouBenAdhem ,

I fear that both situations will get uglier after the US election, regardless of who wins. If Trump wins, Biden will try to force things to a definitive conclusion before he leaves office, and if Biden wins, Putin and Netanyahu will give up on trying not to provoke the US in hope of working with Trump again.

AbouBenAdhem ,

And it’s even easier to convince them that everyone else has been fooled.

AbouBenAdhem ,

It’s an open-and-shut case and everyone saw it coming.

And yet whoever’s doing this evidently doesn’t expect to succeed via legal means.

AbouBenAdhem ,

Does it need to be accessible via API (e.g. SQL) or just a spreadsheet-style web interface?

The countries with the most Fediverse servers are rich and former/current colonial powers. One of the best true barometers of the success of the Fediverse is how quickly we can turn that on its head. ( sopuli.xyz )

In the end I don’t think internet users in rich powerful countries are the users most likely to benefit and invest their time into in the fediverse. They might be the ones with the most free time, money and privilege around computers which makes being on the leading edge of niche technologies far easier, but I don’t think...

AbouBenAdhem ,

What about the usage demographics within each country?

In underdeveloped/exploited countries, internet usage is more likely to be concentrated among the economic elites who formerly benefited from colonialism—so if increasing adoption in those countries just follows the pattern of other internet use, it could have the opposite effect from the one intended.

In an interview with the Journal, Neuralink's first patient, 29-year-old Noland Arbaugh, opened up about the roller-coaster experience. "I was on such a high and then to be brought down that low. It was very, very hard," Arbaugh said. "I cried." He initially asked if Neuralink would perform another surgery to fix or replace the implant, but the company declined, telling him it wanted to wait for more information.

Neuralink isn’t just treating humans like guinea pigs, they’re treating them like disposable guinea pigs.

AbouBenAdhem ,

None of that concerns Neuralink’s treatment of him—just his process of learning to live with it.

AbouBenAdhem ,

So they talk about this as if it were a new innovation at the time—but could it be that this kind of woodworking was more widespread and this was just the only example to survive? Could it have been a standard part of the Acheulian toolkit?

AbouBenAdhem , (edited )

He’s only one year older than Biden. If Sanders acts like he’s too old to serve another term, it’ll make Biden seem too old as well.

AbouBenAdhem ,

If you’re trying to solve inequality through tax policy alone, I wonder what the effect would be of having the top tax rate vary with the Gini coefficient. The idea being that the wealthy can theoretically reduce their tax burden if (and only if) they figure out how to use their economic power to reduce inequality by other means.

AbouBenAdhem ,

You wouldn’t—they’d have to work together. (Something they do seem capable of, when there’s profit in it.)

AbouBenAdhem , (edited )

Right.

If they can proactively reduce inequality, fine; otherwise taxation will do it for them.

AbouBenAdhem ,

Partly—but depending on how much you want to prioritize redistribution vs revenue, you could adjust the tax/Gini curve to set the equilibrium wherever you want.

AbouBenAdhem ,

You can use any port for SSH—or you can use something like Cockpit with a browser-based terminal instead of SSH.

AbouBenAdhem ,

Ok, but protests need to be done “without distraction”? That kind of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it?

AbouBenAdhem , (edited )

If your criticism of the state of Israel is that it gives unequal treatment to Jews and non-Jews, how do you distinguish that from conceiving of it as a Jewish collectivity?

Or if you criticize an action that no other country is engaging in, how can your criticism be similar to that leveled against other countries?

(To be clear—there are purely antisemitic critics of Israel, and the above criteria are potentially useful for distinguishing them. The issue is, can the criteria be deliberately misapplied to silence legitimate criticism?)

AbouBenAdhem ,

They’re parallel terms from two different languages/cultures—it’s not a perfect overlap in meaning, but the terms were never meant to be contrastive or mutually exclusive.

Sotomayor should have asked about assassinating “corrupt” Supreme Court justices, in case some of her colleagues need help connecting the dots.

The US Navy will convert its surplus oil rigs in the Pacific into active mobile military bases

The Navy has its own oil rigs?

Yeah, that’s the expected result for any party that isn’t a cult.

If 62% wanted to replace him with the same alternative candidate, that would be significant.

According to the article, the title is “The Darkness Outside Us”—I assume that’s correct?

If you didn’t map a local config file into the container, it’s using the default version inside the container at /app/public/conf.yml (and any changes will get overwritten when you rebuild the container). If you want to make changes to the configuration for the widget, you’ll want to use the -v option with a local config file so the changes you make will persist.

He just needs to figure out how to combine these all into one film.

So they’re using xenophobia to attack education, because xenophobia for its own sake isn’t evil enough.

Could the birds be using something analogous to a spatial Bloom filter?

AbouBenAdhem , (edited )

I assume we can’t actually resolve spatial detail on the planet, so the effect must have been temporal. Would it have been something like a spike moving through the visible spectrum as the planet transits its star?

Is she asking the academy director to use a fake signature?

Does the police chief not understand the purpose of signatures?

From the article:

But what we know is that it works. We have no indication of any big destruction after the castrum was built.

In addition to the wall, archaeologists found shards of pottery and animal bones at the site

Clearly, the only conclusion accounting for all the evidence is that the wall was built to keep the animals from getting into the pottery.

Sitaridou has established that rather than having developed from modern Greek, Romeyka descended from the Hellenistic form of the language spoken in the centuries before Christ, and shares some key features with ancient Greek.

Are they referring to Koine Greek, or some other ancient dialect?

It’s not a trial transcript, it’s a public discussion. Most people reading it care more about the subject matter than about the commenters, and I try to write and edit comments with that in mind. I’ll edit for spelling, clarity, further information, etc.—anything that might be helpful for anyone reading. The only edits I generally refrain from are ones that affect the context of replies others have already made.

AbouBenAdhem ,

Our Abrahamic concept of “religion” bundles together a lot of tendencies that aren’t necessarily linked, anthropologically. If we translate another culture’s relationship with some natural phenomenon as “sacred”, that doesn’t mean it has the same specifically religious connotations for them that the term would imply in our culture. And it doesn’t mean that our attitude toward religion should carry over to their relationship with their environment.

AbouBenAdhem ,

Lies help get to the truth that the person telling them is a liar.

AbouBenAdhem ,

Or maybe they could call it the “Plasticine”.

AbouBenAdhem ,

Is it not implied that skulls are also getting larger proportionally?

AbouBenAdhem ,

Google will no longer allow public access to its caches. I doubt they’ve stopped keeping caches for their own use.

AbouBenAdhem ,

Now that junk AI content has polluted the public web, access to pre-LLM content has become far more valuable—that’s why Reddit shut down their public APIs too.
