How America’s “Most Powerful Lobby” Is Stifling Efforts to Reform #Oil Well Cleanup in State After State

In #NewMexico, oil companies agreed to work with regulators to find a solution to the state’s more than 70,000 unplugged wells. After months of negotiations, the industry turned against the bill it helped shape.

Voted in #SantaFe #NewMexico today, a place where the Democratic primary determines some of the ultimate races. One race really struck me as emblematic of the future, assuming constitutional democracy survives in the U.S. 1/

Never missing an opportunity to make life easier for extractive industries,
House Republicans passed a suite of bills this week to boost development and dismantle environmental protections across millions of acres of federal land.

The bills stand little chance of passing in the Democratic-controlled Senate,
but they give GOP industry allies something to tout heading into the 2024 elections.

And since several of the measures closely mirror priority actions found in Project 2025,
the 920-page policy blueprint that dozens of right-wing organizations compiled to guide former President Donald Trump,
it might be a preview of what’s to come next year should Trump win the election.

New Stanford-led research shows that U.S. oil & gas facilities are emitting more than 6 million tons of methane per year, 3 times the level predicted by the U.S. government ... fewer than 2 percent of emitters are responsible for 50 to 80 percent of emissions in nearly all regions surveyed.

"The portion of the Permian Basin was by far the highest emitter, with nearly 10% of total methane volume produced in 2019 going straight to the atmosphere."

Over half of hospitals are not complying with a new rule requiring price transparency. Corporate run hospitals that refuse to comply with federal law and let patients know what their services cost do not deserve to exist. Today in Labor History February 2, 1848: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, ending the U.S. war with Mexico. As a result of the treaty, Mexico was forced to cede over 1/3 of its territory to the U.S., including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Texas. 25,000 Mexicans and 12,000 Americans died in the war.
