Canadian-American journalist Sam Forster spent two weeks pretending to be Black to attempt a racial experiment no one asked for. But he is not the first white journalist to try this, and to end up reinforcing stereotypes and failing to address systemic #racism.
“To believe that the richness of Black identity can be understood through a temporary costume trivializes the lifelong trauma of racism. It turns the complexity of Black life into a stunt.”

Today in Labor History June 2, 1863: Backed by three gunboats, Harriet Tubman and her force of 300 black soldiers, freed 800 slaves in the Combahee River Raid, South Carolina. Furthermore, they set fire to the plantations and destroyed millions of dollars-worth of stores, cotton and homes of the wealthy, without losing a single person. Additionally, it was the only military engagement in American history where a woman, black or white, “led the raid and under whose inspiration it was originated and conducted.” Tubman devised her war strategy after repeatedly penetrating across enemy lines and spying on Confederate troop movements. In the aftermath, Confederate Captain John F. Lay said, “The enemy seems to have been well posted as to the character and capacity of our troops and their small chance of encountering opposition, and to have been well guided by persons thoroughly acquainted with the river and country.” Most Americans know of Tubman’s role in the Underground Railroad. However, she was also a spy for the Union Army. And in the late 1850s, she helped John Brown plan his raid on Harper’s Ferry and recruit supporters for the raid.

@Nonilex Would a Trump presidency change the rules so that all trials would only have MAGA juries?

They certainly would not want a trial have liberals either.

So, all trials are unfair unless the right kind of people are serving.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott granted a full pardon to Daniel Perry, a man convicted of murdering a Black Lives Matter protester in downtown Austin in 2020, after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles unanimously recommended the move. Perry claimed during the trial that he shot Garrett Foster, who was carrying an AK-47 rifle, in self-defense. Prosecutors argued Perry was seeking out the confrontation. Read more from USA Today.

Black Lives Matter protests often pitted demonstrators against police in 2020 − but not in every city.

Protests in cities with police departments led by Black women tended to be peaceful.

I'm curious what people think the protest dynamics with regard to @palestine would be like if we were looking at Trump in office instead of Biden over the past few years.

This is not a question about which one is more likely to rush to defend and enable Israel. We all know they are fairly indistinguishable on that point. I'm also not asking whether "Bibi wants Trump to win." Fine, whatever. Plenty of people have opinions about that. This is a different question.

I'm just wondering what folks think this would all look like today if people saw this as "Trump's genocide," i.e., would there be more people in the streets? Would the protests be more fierce?

Like, some of the dynamics around 2020 had to do with fighting a perceived alliance between Trump and the police state, that were different than in 2014, etc, when it was Obama's police state. Not to simplify things too much, just an example.

I'm not trying to gotcha anyone, or advocate for one candidate over the other. I'm interested in your thoughts.

Reports uniformly say they were not students and were almost all men. They were wearing balaklavas.

We really need to stop buying into the argument that are "radical" or "destructive". The opposite is true: the nature of the protests have been peaceful and, on the whole, pretty tame.

The idea that, say, sitting on a road is "radical", "extreme" and "criminal" came from a bunch of aligned think tanks, parroted by the media.
Reject them.

The framing needs to be: Fossil fuel companies are radical, extreme, criminal.

"The recent history of environmental activism in the U.S. shows that the repressive policies being advanced now will have repercussions far beyond a single social movement — and that they’re likely to hit climate and land defenders particularly hard.

Now, just as happened after the [ and ] protests, bills are being considered in six states to enhance penalties for blocking roads, with most of them explicitly framed as a response to pro-Palestine protests."
