Even though the war planes destroy everything
Even though the children are dying for want of blockaded food
Yet will we take refuge in a kite 🪁
and let this be a tale
a world tale told under the moon
and under the sun
and under the last sky

Today in Labor History May 19, 1950: 31 dockworkers died and 350 were injured when four barges carrying 420 tons of ammunition blew up at South Amboy, New Jersey. The blast destroyed nearby businesses and homes and caused $10 million in property damage. The men were loading anti-tank and anti-personnel mines destined for Pakistan and Afghanistan. Three years later, they unearthed sixty-two live mines scattered throughout the waterfront area. Kilgore Manufacturing Company was later charged with 9,000 counts of munitions violations. The indictment documents weighed thirty pounds. The Coast Guard was also cited with negligence in supervising the loading.

Moving and important documentary about and brutal authoritarian oppression. Very reminiscent of “While we watched”, with Ravish Kumar in India. These are real heroes and I feel we have much to learn here.

It is established fact that Australian soldiers in Afghanistan committed war crimes. Today, the man whose courageous act of whistleblowing brought these crimes to light has been sentenced to almost 6 years in gaol.

This is a dark day in Australian history. Democracy needs people to stand up when they see wrongdoing being committed by powerful people. We should be thanking and celebrating David McBride, not imprisoning him.

The Taliban affirms that stoning will be punishment for adulterers — especially women.

NPR reports on a new message from Haibatullah Akhundzada, the group's supreme leader. "You may call it a violation of women's rights when we publicly stone or flog them for committing adultery because they conflict with your democratic principles... [But] I represent Allah, and you represent Satan," Akhundzada said.
