Ok, After much ignoring during a move mastodon.aridgway is back baby... latest mastodon and all the posts incoming #introduction #justmoved #selfhosted
I recently transitioned to self-hosted instances of both Mastodon and Pixelfed. Wanted experience and understanding of how federated systems work. Mastodon, far and above my favorite. Pixelfed, still not understanding the relatively few posts I see everyday; can't seem to follow hashtags. #pixelfed#mastodon#selfhosted#activitypub
A lot of the no-fucks-given pillaging of web content to train #ai and #llms doesn't surprise me. But this revelation actually shocked me. Automattic has been pulling data from SELF HOSTED#WordPress blogs by means of its JetPack plugin and then selling it.
The truth is that Automattic has been selling access to this “firehose” of posts for years, for a variety of purposes. This includes selling access to self-hosted blogs and websites that use a popular plugin called Jetpack; Automattic edited its original “protecting user choice” statement this week to say it will exclude Jetpack from its deals with “select AI companies.”
Normally you use a separate AP to do that. BSDs don't normally have good support for WiFi cards. Consumer WiFi cards aren't really meant for use as APs anyway.
I've been buying these little boxes from AliExpress for years to use as firewalls and routers. My oldest one is almost 9 years old now! OpenBSD installs just fine. Just a BIOS tweak to always boot up after power is restored.
Openwrt works great for gigabit networks with simple firewall rules and no IPS. But used 10-56gbps enterprise equipment is getting pretty cheap, and more complicated firewall configurations need more powerful hardware than the typical openwrt router.
And 56gbps on a home LAN might be overkill, but that's not important.
@BeAware@pieceofthepie I'm suggesting a shared service between Mastodon instances that offers S3 storage designed specifically to reduce duplication, downloads from source servers, etc. It would have the same risk of CSAM as individual instances hosting content produced on other servers but with the added benefit of being able to remove CSAM from all instances that are using this shared S3 service once it's identified.
I haven't played with bluesky. I'm not really interested in spending time over there at this moment, but i would be vaguely interested in mastodon <-> bluesky integrations that people are using. Anyone got something they like, or a cross account publishing (especially a self-hosted or self-hostable solution).
Working on a #selfhosted#homeserver running on a #raspberrypi 5 to handle small-scale semi-private social organisation. Needing a calendar, some form of threaded social chat, file sharing, etc. Ideally using #fediverse / #activitypub / etc. standards so existing apps can talk to it. Any recommendations? (Other than a larger SD card.)
