On my way home after a long day, I was driving by this dry salt flat without glancing at it much cause usually nothing is out there aside from a random coyote.

Um, are you lost, long-billed curlew?

A long-billed curlew stands on the dry and cracked mud, surrounded by bare dead brush and white alkali. It's oval body, supported by two thin long legs, is covered in speckled brown feathers, while the lighter head is turned to the left, revealed the long thin bill that is slightly curved downward near the end. A small dark eye glistens in the sunlight.

A wide stretch of dry flat alkali lake bed, with a shoreline of small dunes built up around the low lying brush. Areas of white alkali surround patches of cracked and broken dried mud. Juniper covered mountains rise up in the background into a clear blue sky with puffy white clouds behind them. In the center of the image is a small oval dark spot standing on the bare ground.

    While I was out today, this Long-Billed Curlew led me on a short walk along the top of a levee (?) along the south edge of North Nutgrass. I took several photos of my silent walking companion.

    A large brown and tan speckled bird strolls across the image from right to left on the dry grey mud road, the forward grey leg lifted showing the thin bare foot. It's long wings taper to a point on the tail. A lighter head and neck holds a gleaming black eye and a long thin downward curved black bill.
