Beautiful hike this weekend.

On the "busy" part of the hike (before people turn back due to snow) I saw a LOT of unprepared hikers.

One caught my eye though -- two hikers, together, in sneakers, both carrying only one object. Not in a pack, just by the trigger.

BEAR SPRAY.

Egad. Just frightening to think what they'd do if startled.

Plenty looks on our Solstice hike, got in a few miles, saw a beaver, Cooper’s hawk, bunnies and turtles, heard bullfrogs bellowing. But only got OK pics of cedar waxwings bug hunting and a Virgina rails clucking in the marsh. Thought about making heathen vows or taking pagan oaths but, nah! #Solstice #Hiking #Birding #GetOutside

I’ve not reviewed a route for a while as I’ve done the ones local to me and/or with good public transport. But new bus services across Dartmoor have suddenly made the moorland routes more easily doable. Princetown to Ivybridge today and the sun is shining ☀️.

Floofy birbs we've seen in the last few days and in the yard. Wish I had hair like the merganser, when I was younger I could have.

A bald eagle with characteristic white head and yellow beak wings through a blue sky seemingly at an angle.
Very pretty cedar waxwing with a swept-back crest on its head. It's head is rusty brown, fading down to gray on its lower body, with a black mask over its eyes, face and beak, its tail tipped with bright yellow.
A maturing Annas hummingbird perched on a feeder, its thin beak long and dark. It is mostly green with a buffy breast and dark gorget, a few spots of ruby behind the eye.

Plenty of interesting sights on the morning ramble, finally got decent shots of the elusive swamp creature known as the Virginia rail. Also some snuggling ducklings and the weirdest thing I've seen in some time, a huge flippin' turtle, I swear two feet long! A spiny softshell turtle, from back east, not native but somehow here in Lake Washington.

Seven fuzzy yellow-brown ducklings in a bunch together, their cuddling for warmth, although it was not cold out. They're in a bunch of yellowing grass.
A very large, soft shelled turtle with a pointy snout, hauled out on a log. It's olive green with yellowish underside and you can see stout front flipper with claw like appendages. Very weird looking.

Always considered myself a hiker who also enjoys related activities like rockhounding, beachcombing, mushrooming and birding. But recently got a new, better lens and so now guess I'm a hiker/birder, still a hiker but also a bird nerd, as my offspring say.

A frilly rust-colored crest atop its head adorns this cedar wawing, a striking bird with a black face mask, yellow breast, rust brown upper back and ray wins and tail. Its upper wings are tipped in bright red, the end of its tail feather bright yellow.

Leftover pics from our local hikes the last couple weeks, some pretty lowland lupine, a large preening beaver, a yellow warbler and a luecistic song sparrow we think might be a chick. Maybe the offspring of "Lucy," our regular leucistic sparrow we see often. Or perhaps it's just Lucy molting.

A pretty big beaver preening, its head is sideways and being scratched by a rear paw, and you can clearly see it big round paddle tail with sort of a scale-pattered surface. It is sitting in marsh grass above a pond, an is reflected in the water.
A pretty yellow warbler, gold and yellow and a short, sharp black beak, perched on limb in the shade among green leaves.
A small song sparrow with a white head and mottled brown and white body. It is perched on a stick and new feathers above its wings are frilly. It has a pigmentation condition know as leucism.

Lot of bird activity on the morning hike, marsh wren singing while building a nest, a black-capped chickadee apparently nesting in a woodpecker hole and a downy woodpecker doing its thing. Oh yes, my fav beaver Little Whittle was in the channel chilling, I love that cutie. , it’s how I keep from going crazy.

Slept through last night's big light show. However, got up for a morning bimble and found some friends that made up for it. First time I could get shots of a common yellowthoat.

Very fluffy floofy newborn goslings on a green shore of a lake. They're yellowish with short dark beaks and eyes, more hairy than feathery at this point.
A large brown and furry beaver preening at the edge of a pond, with it's reflection in the water. It is surrounded by green marsh grass and it's got it head cocked as it preens.

Aurora Activity Level 10/10

Auroral borealis activity is currently extreme. Weather permitting, incredible northern lights displays will be visible directly overhead in most northern communities.

First little fuzzball ducklings of the year that I’ve seen, plus other critters enjoying a fine spring morning. Stay alive

Spotted some masked banditios on the morning ramble, foraging in the beaver works, plus a couple of the usual suspects. Buck was splashing around in there too.

Back with the home critters, the were busy preening and swimming and splashing. I've become quite fond of the furry beasts.

Found an egg and a water bunny on our Easter morning knock about! Actually, this bad boy beaver we call Mossback, I think only the second time I've captured him. I am assuming it is a he, a very big they at any rate.
