He really did call them allies, and I have this quote both in Russian and in English. No matter how you slice it it says what it says. Moreover, this in not his first acknowledgement of potential cooperation, it's been going on for quite some time now.
If you genuinely believe Putin called the Taliban "allies," you must be reading a different script. He mentioned their control and stability role, not a formal alliance.
