I miss a lot of my old comfort foods, like scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast, a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch, then a burger and fries for dinner, with cheesecake for dessert. Sometimes I miss those things, BUT I don’t miss all the extra weight I used to carry.
In a few days I’ll celebrate my 70th birthday. Fifteen years ago, when I was still dining out at restaurants quite often and eating whatever made me feel good for the moment, I weighed about 60 pounds (27 kg) more than I do now. I was overweight, unhealthy, and unhappy.
Since then, by adopting a (mostly) vegan diet and getting regular vigorous exercise, I’ve reached an optimal weight and I feel wonderful — physically, mentally, and emotionally. So, even though I sometimes do miss those old comfort foods, I’m really glad they are now only a memory and not a daily habit.
@breadandcircuses I hear ya. I adopted a vegan diet about a year ago due to a health scare with my heart. Feel better in general, but I miss the harmful comfort foods as well. Though I gripe a lot about the limitations, I need to continue eating this way to reduce my chances of (or delay) another life threatening event. My choice.
@breadandcircuses Similar story. But I gotta have a reason to live. My rules: When I splurge it's for lunch and I don't eat again until 9am the next day. Works for me 1 or 2 times a week. Doc is happy, my weight staying down and my blood sugars are high normal human and I'm a type II diabetic so pretty happy. - It's Sunday, had brunch with friends at noon, it was epic. Gonna be real hungry tomorrow morning, which is sometimes a good feeling.
@breadandcircuses I very much miss bacon. As soon as I can get cultured bacon, I am 100% adding it back into my diet occasionally. (I don't eat mammals, but I do eat birds. ) Basically, it's really difficult to be a healthy vegetarian when you really don't like many vegetables 🤦♀️.
@breadandcircuses
Good very good! That's something to feel great about,sitting is the new smoking. A day at the gym is a day out of a hospital in many cases. Movement like a treadmill is great medicine.
@breadandcircuses You don't have to do without your comfort food. Scrambled eggs is one of the vegan staple dishes, you'll find dozens of recipes on the internet. "Scrambled tofu". Bacon is done with liquid smoke. Cheese is more work but there are some good brands to buy. And burger patties are also relatively easy to make.
Enjoy!
@breadandcircuses@Seitansbraten My apologies, Seitansbraten, for what it is worth. To be clear I respect vegans, just cannot commit to it myself. The fact sarcasm is my first language, I cannot help myself.
I'm not quite your age but I'm catching up and I think I'm also living and eating similarly. Like you I feel healthier but I still eat non vegan a handful of times a year.
One observation to the other commentors in this thread propagating a meaningless argument about purity.
Who causes more animals to be killed, the vegan who rides a car to the restaurant (we all know animals are killed extracting oil right? and that fossil fuels are causing a mass extinction?) the person who walks everywhere and eats a ham sandwich a couple of times a year? the person that lives offgrid and raises chickens? (think Amish / indigenous people).
We are all trying to live well, a little logic and common sense goes a long way.
