While I fundamentally disagree with the wholly instrumental view of education (that its just about preparing workers for work), given this is largely the view of the Tories, their treatment of arts education is either economically illiterate or driven by non-economic reassign....
I suspect its the latter; whatever the arts economic contribution, the right seems just to hate the creative sector & so their policy disregards their own economic logic!
@ChrisMayLA6 They hate any culture if it's created by people who went to a state school. They have no objection to public schools teaching art or music, they have no objection to independently wealthy people creating.
What they can't abide is that the class of people who are supposed to devote themselves to enriching the upper classes might do anything for themselves.
@RolloTreadway@ChrisMayLA6 Most tragically of all though is that culture is impressed on the minds of people who go to state schools who internalise it and then self-police. "Think you're better than us do ya?" "What's with all these airy fairy subjects then?" etc.
