There is a pair of mallards that had been hanging out in the yard lately. I have no idea why. There is no water back there. There’s not even water that close to here?? Like hello yes please stay but why??

@loren It's a vacation. Getting away from all that water for once.

@loren maybe nesting or looking for a nice place. We had a mum mallard with 10 ducklings in tow crossing the Autobahn last weekend. She had been nesting in the green middle strip between the drive ways. We were lucky that no one was driving behind us and no duck was harmed. Mallards have strange nesting habits. Once I found one mallard mum to be at a steep slope next to the sidewalk, struggling to roll her egg back into the shallow nest so I put it back for her.

@loren When I was in college a group of mallards hung out by the door to the dining commons. People smuggled them peanut butter sandwiches. I don't suppose this is the explanation in your case, however.

@loren Maybe nesting? Mallards nest on dry ground but near water. When the babies hatch, mom leads them to water.

@loren They probably have a nest in one of your bushes. Like a low azalea or?? They will move to water later (remember Make Way for Ducklings?)

@madrobin no real full bushes at the moment which makes me question them a bit but hey maybe theyve found a spot i cant think of!
