Transitions from one health care facility to another is always challenging. You’re ahead of the game if your mom is an RN 👏🏻👏🏻.
I learned last year that “bribery” works wonders. We would leave a small container of goodies (wrapped candy/ baked goods, etc) in the room for the different caregivers and it was amazing how more frequently the staff would check in. Made a huge difference much to my surprise.

I’m sorry to hear about your family’s situation and I hope things get better soon. Do you have access to a medical social worker? The hospital might be able to provide one or make a referral. Also you or another family member may have access to an Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) through your job. Those programs are designed to help workers navigate difficult situations and can also be a source of referrals.

Also, EAPs are open to requests like “my family is dealing with my father-in-law’s hospitalization.” They see just about every family structure so it’s not just issues directly affecting the employee that they are there to help with.

Both my late parents spent time in care and the only way I felt sure was to visit every day, look at the chart, ask questions, take pictures. They really should have nanny cams. Your mom flexing (non-threatening) nurse muscle should help. As many visitors as possible kept staff more attentive. Best wishes to your dad and all involved.

no advice to offer—just an expression of sympathy, because this feels like a really scary position to be in ☹️

@philip_cardella I don't have any advice, but hope some others have some good suggestions and he's back home soon!

@philip_cardella After my mom had an operation that turned into an extended hospital stay she required time in a rehab/nursing home afterward. This was a good one but even they need constant observation. We found that frequent comms with her primary care doc was absolutely necessary. When anything was off he would come there and check her himself.
