My last memory lane posts seem to have resonated well so here’s another. is up there as one of the games that I’m not very keen on. This comes from a couple of games (both at conventions with well respected Keepers) where the aim has been to scare the player rather than the characters. This put me off for quite a while but after a good game with someone who was running Cthulhu as their first ever GMing attempt I’m tempted to go back to it.

@FortiterGames I don't think actual Call is necessarily the best system now, but I very much enjoy the investigative-occult-horror gaming style.

@RogerBW What would you go with instead?

@FortiterGames (for which I've written a bit) gets you out from under the thumb of New Chaosium and is freely reusable; Trail of Cthulhu (Gumshoe) if you want to downplay the physical side of things; The Cthulhu Hack if you want something minimalist but effective. Or your favourite generic system; I've done quite a bit with GURPS.

@RogerBW I’ve played (and own) Nights Black Agents so I can see how Trail would work well. I’m at this weekend so might take a look at Cthulhu Hack as Paul is here too. My own favourite generic system is Savage Worlds but I’m not sure that would work here.

@FortiterGames Some kind of breakdown as the PC faces accumulated horror is important. It's not in the SW core rules but I bet someone's written a supplement that does it.

@RogerBW @FortiterGames Cthulhu Dark and Liminal Horror are good, rules light, indie choices too!

@Tim_Eagon @RogerBW I take it that’s not the same Liminal that @TheTweedmeister wrote?

@Tim_Eagon That’s got me interested with the references to John Carpenter 😉

@FortiterGames It's worth it if you like games like Into the Odd, Cairn, Mausritter, etc. Their official scenarios are excellent too (The Mall and The Bloom).

@Tim_Eagon I’ve heard of them but not actually played them to be honest.

@Tim_Eagon Based on your recommendation I’ve just bought the Liminal Horror bundle that’s currently on itch.io 😉

Will have a read after this weekend’s convention.

@FortiterGames Also, @carpedavid created a really cool sci-fi horror hack of called This Mortal Coil - it's about necromancers in space!

@Tim_Eagon @carpedavid That one might have to wait until after the convention 😉

@FortiterGames My 3e copy is falling apart!

@Tim_Eagon I’m quite lucky. My copy is still pretty good. Where the colour plates are it’s a little delicate though.
