When you read about cults, from Jonestown, to The Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God, to FLDS... and others-- the thing that strikes me most is how similar these movements always are. Always overworking people to keep them in a mental fog. "Give up your possessions" rules don't apply to cult leaders, rules forbidding sex even for married couples, but also sexual abuse. The leader "has to" take a bunch of wives... on and on.

Same old rotten story.

@futurebird maybe cuz it's the same old H. sapiens story. maybe it's how we function.

i mean in general, H. sapiens likes to form large groups fawning over charistmatic leaders.

overworked people in mental fog might describe most of us! and obviously humans excell at giving up their possessions to leaders. hence we have the extreme wealth inequality we observe today.

@futurebird Another evergreen is the lack of meaningful accountability.

If the elder confessed in the congregation, it's apostasy to bring it to a criminal trial, or to insist on redress of damages.
