Assuming our rulers stay on their present course, following the mantra of economic growth at any cost, then the climate and environmental crises will surely continue to worsen with increasingly disastrous results.

What will be their response? Certainly not to end capitalism or even slow things down. That’s unthinkable.

Instead they will almost certainly opt for geoengineering at some point, using technology to alter Earth’s ecosphere in an attempt to allay the damage caused by technology altering Earth’s ecosphere.

That’s senseless and stupid. But that’s what they’ll do.

It may turn out, unfortunately, that some form of geoengineering will in fact be a necessity if we are to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of global heating.

But — and this is a very big but — that prospect should NOT be used as an excuse to continue with Business As Usual. It should not be seen as a way to prolong capitalism’s reign over us. We need now.

@breadandcircuses

geoengineering is just climate crisis theatre

going through the motions of "doing something" while avoiding, at all costs, a disruption of Business as Usual

it's not an "excuse" to continue Business as Usual — massive human-made endeavors that get someone somewhere rich while taking massive risks with the biosphere IS Business as Usual

    @breadandcircuses @susankayequinn agreed this is no sub for getting to net zero, but given where we are, my feeling is that research is needed. There are localized and more temporary approaches. Perhaps these could be used to reduce deaths in vulnerable populations from a particular heat wave? Or save the ?

    @andyw350 or kill more people or cause damage we haven’t even thought of—the reasoning is always “it’s so bad, it justifies the risk!” But somehow it’s never bad enough to make the necessary changes to reduce ff usage that we know how to do safely. @breadandcircuses @susankayequinn

    @susankayequinn @breadandcircuses Yes, it's monetising the climate crisis.

    I've noticed that right wing governments in my country never do anything - anything- that doesn't create a business opportunity for someone. Refugees? - contracts running detention centres. Renewables? - contracts for building nuclear reactors. Bushfires? - contracts for manufacturing flame resistant pants ( yes, really). Aged care - privatise it, in fact, privatise everything.

    Stands to reason they'll be thinking up ways to make big bucks out of a planet-wide catastrophe.

    I fear all kinds of geo and eco engineering are already underway, just kept under wraps for now bc they don't know what the exact outcome will be. 😬

    As always, the unintended (deadly) consequences will come to light sooner rather than later, with no recourse or fix available.

    @breadandcircuses nuking everything to cool the earth down is also an idea.
