And yeah, so far there isn't direct evidence that it was hate-motivated, e.g. any slurs or history of transphobic bullying by the assailants, but there also clearly was not much of an investigation so far and the school's response is extremely whitewashy ("we broke the fight after two minutes" - okay, how the fuck do schoolgirls beat someone to the point of death in two minutes?).
