@breadandcircuses By the end of this century, according to work by Walter Anthony and colleagues, up to one million square kilometres of new, abrupt-thaw thermokarst lake areas are expected to form in the Arctic alone. Thanks to the speed of thawing and the morphology of these new lakes, the release of gases is happening at an unprecedented scale.
