While discussing a possible site for a telescope array in India:

“Without domes, won’t the monkeys make a complete mess of the mirrors?”

“No, the leopards with deal with the monkeys.”

Which led me to a different… yet distinctly related… question 🤔

@elizabethtasker monkeys would be a problem at lower altitudes, but the. Sky is probably not that visible from those altitudes anyways. At higher altitudes, monkeys should not be a problem, but leopards and bears may be.

@vibhurishi there are monkeys pretty close to the Mount Abu observatory, and the general area being discussed I think would have a population.

@elizabethtasker Mt Abu is not very high, so yes, lots of monkeys. Also it's a religious place, which further leads to more monkeys and other animals as people make food offerings to them. You need to look in the Himalayan ranges and go above the 3000m mark to get rid of the monkeys. However at those heights you will have logistics issues getting the materials there and day to day items. Hmmm.. quite complicated.

@elizabethtasker The journals of the old South African Observatory in Cape Town have entries where observations were suspended due to leopards on the property.

@elizabethtasker Baboons have often been an issue with South African occultation campaigns. They like disassembling things.

Maybe the monkey don't realize themselves before mirrors . So they rather ignore them at most. Or they see just a rival in each mirror before getting mad 😃
