I think my dog has a UTI or something similar. She’s frantic. Earliest I can get her to the vet is tomorrow at 8am. Any miracle home remedies?

@jerry
Not ideal for wallet, but you could always go to emergency vet

@jerry Why do you think it is a UTI? What breed is she? Age? Is she going more often? Small amounts? Straining? Is she in discomfort/welping when she tries to pee? Is there any vaginal discharge? Any blood in the urine? Any change in diet or water intake? Any change in peeing habits? Any recent stress? Your vet will put her on a course of Amoxicillin. Even if you had some I would not recommend treating until you could see a vet. Try get her to take water. Straining but nothing coming = emergency

@nf3xn I can’t say for certain it’s a UTI, but she is frantic with barking and licking her vulva and just generally super unsettled. She doesn’t seem to have a problem with peeing, and is drinking normally.

She’s a 10 year old English cream retriever that had one UTI I can recall years ago.

I called the vet and they recommended Benadryl until she can get in tomorrow.

@jerry Excessive licking can be a UTI or something else irritating her. Antihistamine might help with itching and will knock her out. Is she wormed? If she isn't lethargic or vomiting, and can still pass water it will probably keep until you can see your vet. The vet will need to palpate. Hope she feels better soon, poor baby.

@jerry @nf3xn I hope the vet mentioned this, but dogs take much larger doses of Benadryl than humans. Check on dosage for her weight.

@ender3 @nf3xn they calculated it for me. It seems to have helped a little bit

@jerry Puppies!

@jerry I'd massage the area lightly if not painful to see if there was pus or obstruction. Go to another vet or ER. Maybe your vet will call in antibiotics today.

@jerry Certain probiotics are helpful. I see some vet med studies online with details.

@jerry a cranberry supplement is something to get started but it's not going to bring immediate relief.

If you've got a pet store close, get some of the cranberry chews with echinacea.

You can also get them at just about any health food section at the grocery store. You'll have to look up the dosage.

It won't fix the UTI but it will definitely help a little bit and get them through until tomorrow.

If the dog is prone to UTIs then staying on the cranberry supplement is a good idea.

@jerry Have you seen her able to urinate recently or does she seem unable to? If she has, was it steady stream or was it intermittent?

@jerry Cranberries or real cranberry juice might be able to help, but I guess too much can irritate dogs stomachs. D-mannose, I believe, is also safe for cats and dogs. But that may be more preventative.
