I've seen three very stupid so-called reasons for defederation in my time here:

1. Single-user instance.
2. Server software (Pleroma and Misskey + its forks are most hated by some people).
3. Federation with someone they don't like.

Let them be that way, there's no percentage in even trying to talk about this kind of thing.
