I'm four years younger than Donald Trump, and since Trump is not old but Biden is, perahps I'm not old and can't speak as an old person.
But I'll say this: elderly folks do have something to offer.
Many of us have a lot, in fact, to offer, due to our long and varied life experiences, the wisdom some of us garner from those life experiences, the ability to read people and respond to them accurately — a life skill that comes with age if it comes at all.
@wdlindsy I have long thought that schools should have the kids hang out old folks every week or two, to improve the lives of both.
(Also, old people should get training in how to fall – like is taught in martial arts – so that when they do, they are less likely to hurt themselves.)
@wdlindsy Agree. I’ll be rolling the tens digit to a 7 next year. We have a lot of wisdom, but not always the mental speed or physical stamina. Similar to an old computer that performs very well but does an occasional blue screen or restart when you don’t expect it.
We should have a key role as advisors, greybeards and village elders. But we should not be on the white horse, sword held high, leading the charge. We should know when to get off that horse and hand the car keys over.
This is part of what makes it infuriating — and, yes, sad — when we find ourselves as older people dismissed, demeaned, treated like rubbish.
Or as we witness in the ongoing spectacle of the feeding frenzy of corporate media about Biden's (but not Trump's!) age, a frenzy driven — how can we not notice? — largely by younger commentators who will one day be old, if they live long, and will surely not enjoy being treated in this way when they are elderly….
