I honestly don't understand why you would need reply-gating on #mastodon

If you have people replying to a toot you don't want to talk with, you can turn on follower approvals and toot to followers only.

Also, there is still a blocking function.

And yes, when you speak publicly and people can hear (or read), some people might reply, even if you don't want them to, just like in the real world.

Also, I imaging this is hard to enforce across instances.
