@welshpixie A quick search tells me that Alex von Tunzelmann's Indian Summer (about the end of British rule in India) and Red Heat (about Cuba, Haiti and Dominican Republic during the cold war) are available on archive.org.
Both very good, especially at dismantling the conventional British/American imperialist interpretations of those times.
Also, Justin Marozzi's Tamerlane (also seems to be on archive) would be a very good follow-up to a book about Genghis Khan.
And Margaret MacMillan's Peacemakers, about Versailles 1919, and Mark Steel's history of the French revolution, Vive La Revolution, both very good.
I haven't checked any of the archive.org links, mind you, so can't guarantee that they work. But those books all appear to be there.
