@arstechnica I just don't think I'll ever understand the appeal of mind-altering substances, whether they're psychedelic mushrooms, alcohol, weed, it's all just the complete opposite of appealing to me. Are people really that depressed that they can't get through life without these things?

@ChallengeApathy @arstechnica I get that it’s not your thing but have you considered that some people actually derive a benefit from some of these things?

And people don’t all do drugs because they’re depressed. There’s a lot more to it than that.

@lawas @arstechnica Yes, I have, thus why "I don't get". Personally, I think a majority of the uses are just excuses. Perhaps there are niche cases where it can actually offer a benefit but in a majority of cases, there are other means to achieve those goals.

For example, you often hear people talk about loving alcohol or weed because it gives them a calm state of mind where they can forget their troubles.

Meanwhile, things such as cha dao (the way of tea) can achieve the same sort of goal without frying your brain or poisoning your liver.

Just my take on the matter, I guess.

@ChallengeApathy @arstechnica The idea that these things all “fry your brain” is a false one. When used responsibly a lot of things don’t actually cause harm and do the opposite.

MDMA assisted psychotherapy, for example, is often an effective treatment for PTSD. Psilocybin has been effective for treating cluster headaches and depression. These things have proven to have a positive impact in real conditions.

Just because it’s not your path doesn’t mean it’s the wrong one.
