Been looking at Faster Than Light: Nomad. It’s got a CC-BY SRD, and looks like a solid system.

Kind of thinking of a space soldier game. Basically life in the trenches of a 40K guardsmen, or starship troopers. Human with a laser rifle and basic body armor entrenched in a hopeless war on an alien planet. WWI in space.

But the trick is not to make it too depressing, while not making it heroic as well.

@deinol How it compares with games like Traveller?

@eldadoinquieto I’d say it’s lighter than Traveller, no stats, 7 broad skills, + talents. But it’s still 270 pages so I’m still reading it. I like the 2d6 + skill but with an advantage/disadvantage mechanic that seems neat.

@deinol Do you consider this more apt for refeering space opera games?

Hm. I feel like it’s geared more towards hard sci-fi, but it could be used for space opera.

I think the intent was primarily to scratch the Traveller sort of itch, but be a bit lighter and get away from the OGL in case Mongoose someday tries to revoke it.

The CC-BY license makes it a good base to build additional modules. Not that I’m sure what I’d add for Space Opera.

@deinol Interesting, with time it could be worth a look.

I know Stellagama already has a “Synthoids” expansion in the works that deals with androids and uplifts. I’ll be curious to see if other 3rd parties add to the system.
