Does irony confuse you? I use irony quite often in my posts, and some users have warned me, that this may not translate all too well between people of different cultures.
So I kindly ask for your input — not on what you think others MAY feel, but what you actually DO feel. Please answer the following:
When I read Mastodon posts, I usually feel irony is
@randahl it's a problem with social media in general. People who "know" you understand that you're being ironic but the Post is shared and read by people who havê no ideal who you are and what you stand for.
@randahl
When I moved to California (from Canada), I discovered that California is an {irony,sarcasm}-free zone - Californians are seldom exposed to irony and are unable to detect it. I suspect that this is the situation in large parts of the Excited States.
I see 3 problems with irony:
1.: Often it is not marked; leads to confusion.
2.: Often people say something without marking it as irony, so I try to discuss with them and in the end they say it was initially meant ironically leaving me with my time wasted.
@randahl To clarify my response. I don’t have a problem with irony, but other people do respond like you’re a fascist, so now even if I’m joking I will explicitly state it at the end…. you twat! joking
@randahl
I feel kind of ridiculous giving advice to a professional writer ; but here it is, given in kindness. I've taken to asking, “Am I venting?” and if so, is that appropriate in the context? Am I giving to the readership or being selfish? I'm not saying never to be ironic. That said, I agree with others who have suggested explicitly marking irony, and making it common practice.
