"Almost as soon as president Joe Biden announced he would halt a weapons shipment to Israel, Steve Witkoff’s iPhone started buzzing.

'Every one of my friends started calling and asking, "What can I do for Donald Trump?"' Witkoff, a pro-Israel donor and fundraiser for Trump’s presidential campaign, told The Bulwark."

@wdlindsy

Seems like many American Zionists are also fascists.

@Greengordon Yes, that's my conclusion, too.

@wdlindsy I rather think I don’t believe a word of that.

@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

@ferryoons You mean you think that Witkoff is making things up? That might well be. But I read his statements after spending time this past weekend with my niece, who works closely with a Jewish colleague (one of many) who told her only in the past week that the Jewish community in her city, a mid-South US city, is leaning strongly in Trump's direction, and that she believes the Jewish vote will (rightly) give Trump the election.

@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

@ferryoons I would hope that's not the case. One poll after another for some years now show US Jews voting heavily Democratic. But what's been happening in the Middle East seems to be unsettling many traditional political alignments in a disturbing way, I also realize.

"'My "Never Again" is trumping my "Never Trump" these days," Asness told the Free Press, refusing to rule out supporting Trump.'

Such a twisting of reality. "Never again" means no more genocides. Not even genocides perpetrated by the Israeli government.

wdlindsy OP ,
@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

@katrinakatrinka I agree: very much a twisting of reality. And "never again" absolutely does mean no more genocides.

@wdlindsy ah yes. Finally an excuse to expel those pesky Palestinians who have the nerve to live on land we want.

Ethnic cleansing is not a pretty thing.

I was a youngster at the time of the 1967 war, and I respected and believed my elders. Only much later did I realize how racist much of the discussion I heard in the late 60s & 70s was.

wdlindsy OP ,
@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

@PaulWermer Thank you for this valuable statement.

@wdlindsy As long as these people think supporting a fascist criminal is good, who knows what depths they will stoop to.

wdlindsy OP ,
@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

@conflicts Indeed. And in supporting Trump, they're also very much supporting yet another fascist criminal — Netanyahu — who is cut from the same cloth.

@conflicts@mastodon.social avatar

@wdlindsy I have to say as a / research professional, I am continually stunned by 's leadership and it's historical insensitivity. They should be SO MUCH better. I would never have that same expectation of & .

wdlindsy OP ,
@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

@conflicts I agree. It's always disheartening to see people who have experienced longtime grotesque oppression turn around and oppress others, when in a position to do that. But it happens drearily often in history.

“'It was a notable shift,' Witkoff said. 'I personally received and helped secure large Jewish donors over the last two weeks . . . and I’m not talking four-figure donations. I’m talking six-figure and seven-figure donations.'”

@wdlindsy people don't always understand diplomatic maneuvers.

wdlindsy OP ,
@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

@timo21 No, they don't. And as the article says, many of these high-flying financiers want Trump in office because they like his coddle-the-rich economic plan, and have been looking for any excuse at all to support him.

@wdlindsy So these guys prefer corrupt strong men who support extremist theocracies...what else is new?

wdlindsy OP ,
@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

@cra1g Yes, that's it in a nutshell. And though seeing and saying this may not be new, it still needs to be seen and said while a close election in the US tells us that Donald Trump and his party may regain the White House — with dire consequences for the whole world.
