I backed Tales of the Valiant and Shadowdark and probably a few others I’m forgetting, but I find I can’t get excited about them because at their heart, they are still 5e D&D and I’m just tired of anything directly evolved from D&D. I’ve played enough of them over the years, and I really want new games.
That said I’m excited by the new version of Talislanta, even though I don’t expect it to be very different at all. But that’s getting a classic back in print.
@deinol Dunno if it scratches what you're trying to itch, but Break!! has been on my radar for a bit - super dig the Ghibli / Zelda inspirations. I believe it's still d20 based, though. https://www.breakrpg.com/
@deinol yeah, it looks like the whole game is driven by each player having a single D20, which is kinda novel. Not sure how I feel about no fistful of dice lol
@deinol In case you are using the original rules for Talislanta (and the Epic Edition has those), they are very different from D&D, but they still use a D20.
@moonmoth yup. I’m a long time fan and have every edition of Talislanta.
I don’t think many people realize how much Talislanta influenced D&D. Particularly 3rd edition Talislanta (by Jonathan Tweet, 1992) and 3rd edition D&D (by Jonathan Tweet, 2000).
