This one particular ant is driving me crazy!

@futurebird
wasn't there a 1980s song about this ant? Released a few years after that Gibson novel you just re-read, if I recall correctly.

@futurebird

is it the one quietly humming and then shouting BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!. That would bug me too!

@futurebird Tulip? Is she an escape artist? Whatever happened to the one with the yellow gaster?

@thepoliticalcat

Daffodil passed away and we had a funeral.

@futurebird 😭 😭 😭

@futurebird I'm so sorry! I hope she's happy in her new home over the rainbow bridge, with her sisters.

@thepoliticalcat ... IDK what you expected LMAO

@futurebird I cry at funerals, no matter whose (well, except for a list of people NOT including you, or ants). I also cry at weddings, bc I think it's insane to bring new life into this terribly fucked up world. I shed a tear for Daffodil. I hope Tulip has a longer life. (How long DO ants live?)

futurebird OP ,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@thepoliticalcat Workers like these live about 18 months, both Dottie and Daffodil were over two years old at least.

@futurebird Poor little things. OTOH, they live surrounded by the love of their mother and sisters every single day, which is wonderful in and of itself.

thepoliticalcat ,
@thepoliticalcat@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird Do you think they live longer lives bc you protect them? They're indoors, unlikely to encounter a hostile colony, well supplied with food & water ... you even provide cleaning services. Must be very restful to be an ant in your care.

futurebird OP ,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@thepoliticalcat I'd hope so. They also have extra stress due to lights and strange things happening. But, I think most ants find their lives very strange no matter what.

thepoliticalcat ,
@thepoliticalcat@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird Well, there's that whole "surrounded by the love of one's family" thing, which seems very nice, especially since it's pheromone-based. So all ants are sisters to each other and daughters to their mother and it's (hopefully) a ball of love. That would be nice. We don't often get love, we humans.

@thepoliticalcat

They like to sleep in big piles. I think they are happy when they do that.

@futurebird Science News is reporting that research is currently under way into the lives of ants and bees. I await their revelations with hope!
