DuffmanOfTheCosmos , in how's your week going, Beehaw

Pretty great actually. On my first relaxation vacation with no specific agenda in several years. The beach is gorgeous, the breeze is cool and the drinks are flowing. Life can be good, sometimes anyway. Trying not to think about the work stacking up that will be waiting for me on my return.

Kissaki , in "To be mad at the right person, for the right reason, at the right time, with a proper response, isn't possible."
@Kissaki@beehaw.org avatar

I think it's very possible.

With the right causation or correlation, the correct person is identified.

Whether right reason refers to being mad at the person for the related reason or the reason itself being valid and rightful, both are possible.

Right time is related to the cause of anger as well as when the anger takes place. Both is possible to be at the right time.

You can even be angry without any visible indication. There's also cases where an aggressive response is the right response. Proper response is possible too.

Damn, Lyle Lovett is good. I might have been the youngest person in the audience, and I'm not that young. Glad I was able to be there!

Never once.

mmmmmmmmmmgh,

term paper,,,,

Snowpix , in Does anyone else think of a giant bee with a cowboy hat when they hear the name Beehaw?

I always thought "beehaw" was a sound donkeys made. Somehow I never made the connection that it had anything to do with bees until now...

Seeing all these comments on use of ACs... what happens if it cumulatively overloads the grid and you get blackouts?

Is there a Plan B?

JCPhoenix , in what’s your favorite way to beat the heat?
@JCPhoenix@beehaw.org avatar

I just don't go outside. AC running throughout the day, though I do set max temps at different levels throughout the day to take advantage of lower electricity rates or avoid higher rates.

This past week I did have to do some rare outdoors work for work over a few days. My team elected to do it in the evenings and early in the mornings. Was still quite warm, but not sun glaring down on us, we're gonna get heat stroke from this, afternoon sun.

I prefer to think of a regular size bee with a giant cowboy hat

jarfil ,
@jarfil@beehaw.org avatar

That sound like a regular hat, with a regular bee... hiding inside.

Ouch!

Radiant_sir_radiant , in what’s your favorite way to beat the heat?

Not the greatest solution, but... living in a place where it's mostly been raining for the last 7-8 weeks makes it easy to cool down.
I'd love to write something about A/C and going for a swim/dive instead, like last year. Maybe in July?

Nemo , in Does anyone else think of a giant bee with a cowboy hat when they hear the name Beehaw?

I mean, it is the logo

Kissaki ,

Gamers_mate OP ,

To be honest seeing the logo where it appears small on the desktop site, I thought it was a top down view of a Bee with the hat being the head colour and the two eyes just being spots.

JCPhoenix ,
@JCPhoenix@beehaw.org avatar

Wow, I feel dumb. I've been here for a year and never looked closely at the bee (old or new). Never noticed the cowboy hat!

Gamers_mate OP ,

omg I only saw the bee in the logo due to it being smaller on a pc screen and thought the hat was just part of the Bee.

That logo looks cool like the little CowBee is saying this hive ain't big enough for the both of us. Though they would communicate it through dancing with that as the subtitles.

It has confused me, as I (And friends) pronounce it Bee Whore. It has made me look at bees in a new way. No shaming of bees, please.

Edit: Maybe this is to do with my British accent?

I mean, there's emojis like bee snuggle fox available bee snuggle fox emoji

Gamers_mate OP ,

Cute emoji though I am not sure if that is a Bee sized Fox or a Fox sized Bee.

Lionir ,
@Lionir@beehaw.org avatar

The answer is yes.

Gamers_mate OP ,

I think that is how most people pronounce it because Yee haw kind of sounds like yee whore. though it has a very different meaning.

Nemo ,

What? Not in my accent. Is yours one of those where "claws" and "doors" rhyme?

Gamers_mate OP ,

Yes Claws and Doors rhymes in my accent.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

How else would you pronounce them?

Nemo ,

different vowel sounds (short A like "father" versus long O like "oat")

different final sounds (one ends with the mouth still on the vowel sound, one ends with an R sound)

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

Klaas and doh-errs.

Nemo ,

Close enough, though "doors" is one syllable when I say it. Definitely not even a slant rhyme, though.

rand_alpha19 ,

In what accent does a W have an R sound? Australian?

t3rmit3 ,

Certain British accents (like a London accent) have an 'aw' in particular sound like 'or'. Not sure about Australian.

Not bad - chuffed to bits that my daughter got a 'First with honours' in English and Creative Writing. No idea what that means* apart from it's an excellent result.

*I left school at 15, before taking all my exams so that I could start work in a factory. So very proud of her ;-) Her substack is here

apis ,

Suspect your daughter may be downplaying things a bit here...

She got the top result possible. Students who achieve First with honours (sometimes written as 1:1) have to be even better than excellent across their entire degree.

Some years nobody on a particular course will do this well, because it is reserved for the exceptional.

baggins ,
@baggins@beehaw.org avatar

Holy cow!

That's even better than I thought. Even prouder of her now.

Thank you
