Ignacio , in how’s your week going, Beehaw
@Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

After a couple of months doing photosynthesis, my ADHD medication finally decided to allow me to study this morning. But no more than 90 minutes. Now I'm again in my endless scrolling and doing nothing productive.

Besides that, I'm trying to be more active in kbin.social / lemmy instances to create more content through comments or post and engage, knowing the inevitable doom from Reddit (although I have an user on sopuli since last year).

CosmicGiraffe , in I put together a guide aimed at Redditors for Kbin and Lemmy!

I wouldn't bother with the concept of de-federation in a beginners guide. One of the most confusing bits of the fediverse to new users is picking a server. For most users, the one they pick doesn't really matter, but talking about defederation makes it sound like a really important choice.

balerion , in Hi any dropout subscribers here?
@balerion@beehaw.org avatar

Not a subscriber yet, but I might become one after I finish Fantasy High.

DaughterOfMars , in What's the weirdest food you've eaten?
@DaughterOfMars@lemmy.world avatar

Dragonfruit. How do people eat that shit? It tastes like you drank a glass of water someone farted on.

Whimseymimple , in Kagi is crazy good
@Whimseymimple@beehaw.org avatar

I switched to Kagi a few months ago, and I haven't had to use !g at all so far. Given that I had to daily on DDG, I'm pretty satisfied with the results!

mrmanager OP ,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Exactly my experience. It was just a switch and forget thing. Very nice.

Maybe it's just a few people that care, but I really care about not having Google record what I'm doing on the web. Why should any company be allowed to look at that? They don't own the internet, it's not theirs, even though I guess it feels like that sometimes since they are everywhere.

ffmike , in askBeehaw (not-so-serious edition): what's the dumbest thing you did as a teenager?
@ffmike@beehaw.org avatar

So many, many choices.

I think my all-time dumbest came when I was about 22, so it doesn't fit here. In my teens...probably driving drunk at speeds up to 100mph on the mountain roads up above Pasadena with the headlights off at night.

sleepybisexual ,
@sleepybisexual@beehaw.org avatar

I've done awful things before finding out I was bi, no I won't elaborate

Ni , in How do y'all feel about writing things by hand?
@Ni@kbin.social avatar

Honestly I find that making physical hand written notes better cements the ideas in my head. It may be because I'm older so I started with only pen and paper which means that's how I best think, but for me writing and typing are two different tools and I tend to use both.

dcormier , in non-stickied PSA: Beehaw has signed the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact

I’m disappointed.

“The fediverse is open and interoperable!”

“No, not them.”

Lionir ,
@Lionir@beehaw.org avatar

Well, we've defederated with other people in the past (and will continue to do so in the future most likely). Federated systems are not an all or nothing situation. IMO that's the biggest draw and improvement over a distributed system for social media.

bananahammock ,

I agree, but why defederate before knowing any details? What is the harm in hearing them out

alyaza OP Mod ,
@alyaza@beehaw.org avatar

it's literally Facebook. i think we've heard and seen more than enough to from Mark Zuckerberg and the platform which actively continues to be one of the worst vectors of online harm, misinformation, and advocacy for social and political violence (among many, many other ills). particularly with respect to our instance: their project can get fucked as far as i'm concerned.

fiah ,
@fiah@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

before knowing any details?

before? facebook is almost 20 years old, they've had plenty of time to show us who they are and they have. If you have any doubt about their moral fiber then I suggest you pull your head out of your ass and enter the fucking 2020s

ikantolol ,
@ikantolol@kbin.social avatar

there are instances in the past where big players acquire the small ones and while at first they seem to be cooperative, it ultimately destroys the small players, one such case is XMPP the open chat protocols long before we have Matrix, killed by Google

https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish

I guess this is a cautionary action, better to grow slower rather than be killed by Meta.

wildeaboutoskar , in How do y'all feel about writing things by hand?
@wildeaboutoskar@beehaw.org avatar

Writing by hand is definitely the main way I learn. The act of writing it embeds it in my memory moreso than looking at a screen.

I wonder how much of that is down to how we were taught though and it being more familiar and linked with education and cognition. Someone must have done a study on this somewhere.

Satiric_Weasel , in non-stickied PSA: Beehaw has signed the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact

I guess I'm the odd one out when I say I fully support this decision. I do not trust Meta, I Do not trust their intentions, and they have given me no reason to trust them.

Thanks Beehaw.

madkarlsson , in What petty hill will you die on?

I loathe tomatoes on burgers and will throw it in your face if you serve it to me.

Absolutely pointless taste wise and all that water is what makes the bread and patty move around with no respect for each other.

thrawn21 OP ,
@thrawn21@beehaw.org avatar

Ooooh them's fighting words. Have you tried a burger with a homegrown tomato? Pretty night and day, might just change your mind.

Track_Shovel , in What petty hill will you die on?

There is no space between the last letter of a sentence and punctuation.

Please , please , make it stop !

orphiebaby ,

There is also a space after an ellipsis... like this.

Not...like this.

I don't care if everyone does it wrong, it's both harder to read (less functional) and it flies against normal punctuation conventions.

Also, don't get your punctuation inspiration from Japanese games. An ellipsis is three periods, no more. Exclamation mark always goes after question mark. ("?!" = correct) Japan adopted our punctuation marks and did it their way. If you're writing in English, do it the English-language way.

toastio , in What petty hill will you die on?

I will return anything sent to me in an Amazon package.

I went directly to your site for a reason, which is to avoid Amazon. If you secretly fulfill from Amazon or Amazon Warehouses, I will return the item and shop elsewhere.

Showroom7561 ,

But... a lot of people and businesses reuse boxes.

A Chihuahua is not a legitimate dog, it's a rat with delusions of grandeur.

Th4tGuyII ,
@Th4tGuyII@kbin.social avatar

That's a disservice to rats, their domestic variety are smarter and better behaved. Least that I've seen

Jarmer , in What petty hill will you die on?
@Jarmer@kbin.social avatar

Pugs are not "so cute" because they're ugly. They are deformed from countless generations of in-breeding and genetic manipulation by horrible horrible humans and are in constant pain, cannot breathe, and have countless other physical ailments. They should not exist in their current form and it makes me sad for the animal whenever I see one, and immediately lose all respect for the owner for furthering such a travesty.

Lalaz4 ,

The only way that it'll become better is if the standard for the pug changes. The UK kennel club has updated it's standard to include a healthier head and muzzle shape. Unfortunately the American Kennel Club has not yet done so. The pugs that are presented at Westminster are sickening.

I also take beef with the awful roached back of the German Shepherd show standard.
