Bit-breaker working in cybersecurity/IT. Only languages I know are English and Programming ones.

Sometimes I write things about technology.

If I told you the SHA256 for this sentence starts with ‘c, 5, four, a, and a’, would you believe me?

Java and gradle build is way easier (IMO) than trying to wrangle the dep and build steps of everything react/node/rust based.

I'd like to draw everyone's attention to one of our first philosophical documents- the core principles document, "What is (and isn't) Beehaw". I'm going to zero in on a small portion in the middle of the first part here, because a recent discussion in the LGBTQ+ space got charged and, in a way, where a larger educational or...

Hi Jeena! What instances are on your federation lists for jemmy.jeena.net? What "languages" are selected for the federation/your profile? There's a few active instances at this time, but does depend on if you're subscribed to them, and the languages they send (and your instance accepts).

Penguincoder ,
@Penguincoder@beehaw.org avatar

Check your settings for https://jemmy.jeena.net/admin. Is Private instance checked? (Probably shouldn't be). IS federation enabled checked (It should be) Anything listed in allowed instances? What about blocked instances? Languages should have everything listed, including Undetermined.

Unsubstantiated name calling. There is no sufficient evidence to support the label you're attributing to the person. It is opinionated and name calling.

Do others feel somewhat conflicted talking positively about commercial goods/services?

Sometimes I feel like if I do so I'm basically serving as an ad, and I don't really care for that, especially if later I find that the business was scummy in some ways (which is often the case, especially later as it changes leadership/ownership)....

Penguincoder ,
@Penguincoder@beehaw.org avatar

how do you deal with it?

By not caring what others think. It's become way more efficient for me to pay for certain reliable items or services rather than spending my time to learn to and do such. If a service or product saves me time and frustration, ya I'm much happier to pay someone to do it or pay for a known fix. Sometimes that results in me spouting off about how much that was worth to me, and how much I saved (if not in money, at least in sanity).

Sharing your experiences and thoughts on a commercial product doesn't make you a shill, or a walking ad. Rather sharing your experience with friends should be seen as a trustworthy review.

at least Spotify won’t make any money from it.

And the artists still won't. So given in either case, the artist don't make squat; using Spotify is easier. So, use spotify.

Penguincoder ,
@Penguincoder@beehaw.org avatar

When the suggestion is to pirate it, so spotify doesn't get any money I don't see how your follow-up comment matters. In either case of piracy, OR using spotify, the artist still doesn't make money. Problem is that piracy comes with a lot more hoops and headaches.

Of course, buying the artist CD or songs directly is much preferable to either.

Just wanted to comment, this isn't a Voyager issue breaking compatibility with Beehaw. They have given us a lot of warning and efforts at keeping backwards compatibility. This was Beehaws decision to not upgrade Lemmy to a version that Voyager supports.

Should be just the tracks from c/music, within the last 7 days. It has to search for the artist and track name on spotify, and should only list it here if there was a match found; which means unfortunately, if it's not on spotify my script won't put it on the list here. But what you're saying is different, in that these tracks aren't on Beehaw in the last week? That isn't the purpose of these threads; I'll have to take a look into why that is currently not doing as I requested.

EDIT: I notice what you are talking about. My apologies, remove those erroneous entries from the playlist.I will work to refine my posting for these threads.

I'm tired, Alyaza. I keep doing things but keep not getting things done, and I'm just tired of trying. Was/Am really hoping to be more productive this week, and not let the time just get away from me again.

Typically In my experience, what you describe is a Power/Wattage issue. Could be a powerdown, sleep issue, or something like either the GPU isn't getting the power it needs when it needs it, or the PSU is just over taxed. Would really want to see DMESG logs and more hardware info (Do you have crashdumps?). Try disabling any powerdown or C-states for the GPU, prevent it from going to sleep.

That query by itself in a vacuum is fine. Combined with many other triggers on the DB, and then federating that out before actually deleting from the local DB... well that is what creates all sorts of headaches.

Beehaw isn't the only instance of Lemmy, nor the only instance in the Fediverse. Sure, the feature being added to Lemmy now, won't benefit Beehaw. But it would still benefit others. Refusing to work on the features that Beehaw wants out of spite, will definitely hurt other instances too.

There is a stark difference between closing an issue and actually resolving the problem. You're right; lots of those issues are closed. The identified problems remain and don't go away merely because you close an software repo issue on it.

Just going to leave this here. Pretty sure this user knows about the fediverse quite a bit more than you're assuming.

When we talk about Open Source, we’re not just talking about code. We’re talking about a way of approaching software, of designing it, developing it, distributing it, spreading it, making it something that benefits everyone. So being a developer in this context means thinking of software as a common good and then contributing means making it better and if by better we mean more useful, more accessible, more secure, more powerful, more stable and easier to use, then it’s clear that we are not just talking about writing code.

Penguincoder ,
@Penguincoder@beehaw.org avatar

It is absolutely impossible for 2-4 devs to please everyone in a codebase used by [...] people [...] You cannot make everyone happy.

I agree, you are correct.

Check out our github profiles if you think we aren’t doing work. This is easily verifiable.

Not what I said. You are paid for your work on Lemmy, right?? I didn't say you weren't doing any work. You're being obtuse and putting words in my mouth.

Good job entirely dismissing everything my comment said without actually responding to anything in it.

Penguincoder ,
@Penguincoder@beehaw.org avatar

because the small number of developers can’t keep pace with issues.

Maybe there'd be plenty more devs if it wasn't written in a new, up and coming, difficult language to understand let alone master. Maybe there'd be more code contributions if existing ones weren't closed because you don't see this being an issue. Maybe there'd be more developers if you'd let there be.

Penguincoder ,
@Penguincoder@beehaw.org avatar

Yet this comes across as criticizing their project for what they’ve always said it was, while using said project to do so. Just a bit boggling.

No I'm criticising the Developers complaint that there's only a few active developers for Lemmy, and the rest of you freeloaders don't contribute and code.

The number of people who understand Rust, can code in it, know of Lemmy and want to contribute is very few. There would be More developers contributing to Lemmy if it weren't written in Rust.

Penguincoder ,
@Penguincoder@beehaw.org avatar

You have never made any code contributions [...] I doubt that you donate any money.

What a horrible take on being an open source community. If this is what you want for Lemmy instances or admin to become "worth it" to you, change your license; or your change your attitude. You keep bringing up that Lemmy is open source as your argument, but really not understanding how open source works, or the culture of such.

Stop using my Software says the developer of an open source/source available software.

It doesnt really matter what you want. The software is open source so anyone can use the software freely.

Penguincoder ,

You're not, paid, for, your efforts? Seems to be a misleading statement.

Frustrating on some (A lot of) aspects but better this week than before. Hanging in there which seems to be my motto as of late. Lots of things I want to do, plenty of things I need to do but nothing I really feel like doing. Meh. Is this weeks' word.
