Transform2942 , in Hello Beehaw - New User.

It's not natively supported in Lemmy yet but lots of third party apps can. If you're on Android Sync and Connect both support it.

You're not wrong about the tankie thing, I'd say it's the major conflict in the "threadiverse" right now.

As you can see, I'm on lemmy.ml on this account. The moderation of the server is definitely weird. Since it is the flagship server there's more diversity of thought than you would expect.

If you want to avoid the tankie trolling and brigading the instances you want to block are lemmygrad.ml and hexbear.net

Bizarroland , in [Slightly NSFW] Should I ask stepdaughter to wear less revealing stuff in private?
@Bizarroland@kbin.social avatar

Sounds like the issue is that you feel sexually attracted to her at a purely base and instinctual level and you don't want to feel that way towards someone you consider as a daughter, and it's easier for you to try to have her fix the problem than for you to process your own lizard brain response to an attractive woman being near you.

There is nothing inherently wrong with feeling the way you're feeling, it just means that like most people you are not actually as noble and pure as you would prefer to be.

If you can process that whole shebang then it might make it easier for you to actually step into the role of being closer to your own personal ideal of pure.

I would start with taking a deep breath, holding it for the count of three, and then exhaling it and noting how you feel, what you feel, and how that makes you feel, and then accepting that without being influenced by it.

Sexual urges are normal. Not being in control of them is not normal.

Ethereal87 , in How do you find new music to listen to?
@Ethereal87@beehaw.org avatar

Interestingly, I feel like I've found more "new" music using Spotify's Release Radar playlist instead of their Discover Weekly playlist. I'll typically (and aggressively) mark things as like/don't like in those playlists and add what I like to my own "Testing" playlist to see what sticks to me. Release Radar tends to have more likes than Discover Weekly does, despite what the two are named, and it's providing new artists on top of existing ones I'm already a fan of.

That's usually good enough for me, though the occasional time I'm listening to the radio or a song comes on over the speakers when I'm out and about gets a quick Shazam from me to know what it was.

Radio free fedi is the best for discovery. All kinds
of stuff from all over the fediverse

VOwOxel , in What is your favorite movie?? Why??

Castle in the Sky.
I just recently started watching some Studio Ghibli films, with Castle in the Sky blowing me away with a simple, but amazing story, concept and beautiful execution. Hayao Miyazaki is a genius.

GreyShuck , in What are your festive traditions?
@GreyShuck@feddit.uk avatar

I'm a pagan, so it is all about the solstice for my SO and I.

We will typically go somewhere for the sunrise that morning. I have been to Stonehenge and a couple of other stone circles in the past, camping out overnight beforehand - and more recently have watched the live stream from Newgrange. For the last few years we have also celebrated Brumalia - a Roman and Byzantine winter festival that started (in its later period) on Nov 24th. So we progressively decorate the house with lights or holly, ivy, pine cones etc each day from then until the start of Saturnalia on Dec 17th. I have also made an advent-style calendar with chocolates in matchboxes that runs throughout Brumalia - Nov 24th to Dec 25th.

On Dec 5th, which is Krampusnacht and also a Faunalia festival, we will hang a Krampus figure up and have taken to watching the 2015 movie for the last few years.

During Saturnalia itself we will have at least one meal or party with friends - which usually has some element of mis-rule. On the solstice itself, as well as watching the sun rise somewhere or another (probably a local beach this year, as we are on the east coast), there is a local Mummers' play that we usually go along to in the evening. The solstice is also when we do our gift-giving.

On the 26th, there is a Cutty Wren ceremony locally that we will go along to and then there is some morris dancing at another location on new year's day.

That sounds fantastic! I love the idea of progressively decorating, sounds much less daunting

I've really enjoyed getting to know more about Krampus over the last few years

plactagonic , in What are your festive traditions?

So in my country traditional dish is carp with potato salad. Usually we go to short trip around, return at 16:00 and start preparing it. After dinner we open the presents, watch some fairy tale and go to church. I am atheist but at least I can tell that I periodically visit church, nobody needs to know that my period is 1 year.

Are you in a Nordic country? Sounds nice!

I'm atheist too but spend most of December in cold churches. I like the ritual of it even if I don't actually believe

bermuda , in How would our community go about marketing itself?
@bermuda@beehaw.org avatar

Disappointed. title made me think this was gonna be a convo about advertising beehaw.

frog ,

I'm pretty relieved that it's not! Beehaw is a good community because it's small and has standards about who is welcome. Marketing the site would go against that principle.

sculd , in How would our community go about marketing itself?

If there is no budget, you would need to go to communities who might be interested in asking such questions.

Christian adjacent forums / subreddits (I know..) / Facebook groups.

On the other side, I think some atheists might want to know what Bible said about something in order to refute them.

If there is some budget, then:

  • link building, ask related websites if they would like to put a link at their related sites to increase discovery
  • Adword but I imagine Bible related keywords would be prohibitively expensive

    belated_frog_pants , in What do you think is a good thing about young people these days?

    Gen Z folks seem a lot less inclined to believe hard work under capitalism will get you anywhere and they have little company loyalty. Proud as fuck of them. 💖

    catacomb ,

    Yep, employers under capitalism only understand leverage. Job hop, play multiple offers against each other, negotiate a higher salary and have the power to walk. It feels sleazy but it's self preservation. It's only as sleazy as their incentive to pay you as little as possible.

    "Hard work" was the wisdom passed down but I think it came from confirmation bias. If your employer gives you good raises just to keep you, you'll feel you deserve it instead of attributing it to a very good job market for workers.

    It's cool, we figure it out after a year or so in this environment (if nobody has told us.)

    henfredemars , in What do you think is a good thing about young people these days?

    In a backwards sort of way, I think that young people are rightly skeptical. They've been sold truckloads of low quality bullshit from a young age (think like dumb videos that are obviously fake), and that encourages the development of a personal filter that many boomers lack. The forces at work plant the seeds of critical thinking.
