There needs to be actual content rules. TIL worked best when the mods actually adhered to those content rules. Otherwise you just have people posting all kinds of nonsense. Quality is better than quantity
#MorningAll & #TZAG G’day Squirrel Fans, hope I find you bright eyed & bushy tailed!
Monday has dawned super bright & warm, like an excited teenager off to the seaside!
Not much on today - I was going to tackle the shed today but it’s going to be stonking hot , I may leave it till the end of the week when it’s slightly cooler.
Anyone accusing me of procrastination will have to wait their turn!
@rbreich being “just” 55 years, I do ask myself the same question about the people here in eastern parts of Germany. They vote for a fascist party and I don’t know how they came to get to a point in which one would do that. Some may be too young to understand, but a lot are old enough to have grown up in a semi-fascist society: the GDR.
Did they really forget about it all?
Or do they think “well, it wasn’t that bad last time, how could it be worse?”
I hope America will choose Biden.
"Trump could have saved lives by setting a better example during the early days of COVID."
This is true. But doing things like wearing a mask, being supportive of the public health education initiatives was not free for Trump it would have cost him politically. These actions would not win him acclaim with people like me (since to me it's "just doing your damn job") but they would have made him less popular with some of his base.
Do any of you have an ambient music making app on your phone that you enjoy? I'm thinking something like a simple synthesizer simulator that lets you make ethereal soundscapes to relax to or to save to use as background music?
I have a vague memory of an app like this years ago...
@Kiki They're not listed anywhere yet, I think they will be in my Etsy shop by mid July or so! It's currently closed because I'm saving stock for Dokomi next week ;-;
Morning everyone. It's bright and sunny and polleny and I have too much work to do (my own fault, because I've been struggling to get stuff done of late).
@RolloTreadway I'm a bit tired today (woke up far too early), and could quite happily curl up for the day, but I don't think that's going to happen. I did see two hares earlier this morning, which was a lovely thing to encounter.
To use the Montreal subway, you tap a paper ticket against the turnstile and it opens. But how does it work? And how can the ticket be so cheap that it's disposable? I opened up the tiny NFC chip inside to find out more... 1/15
@kenshirriff Even at 10ct/ticket, why dispose this? The subway in Chinese cities uses RFIDs, too. Either as rechargeable card, or as token for one ride (the token is round and plastic). The one-ride token is collected when you leave the subway.
Given that the cheapest ride there is just 20ct, not wasting the 10ct for the token seems reasonable.
@kenshirriff 9c per chip is more expensive than I expected.
I thought at volume they'd be closer to 2c-3c.
With the manufacturing cost of making the card around the 10c-15c
At first it is hard to believe that most people don't pay much attention to politics. Most people don't know what "project 24" is or the significance of the phrase "obstructing an official procedure" (maybe you are such a person) --but, when I think about how tense, nervous and occasionally helpless political news makes me feel I totally get it. Also, a lot of this stuff is boring and kind of technical.
But, if you do follow all of this stuff you are probably, like me, on the verge of dissolving into a cloud of nervous particles.
How do we harness that nervous energy? The right has excelled at harnessing angry and fearful energy as of late. Their "well-informed" base is pouring their energy into two things:
Making the election close enough to fight over it.
Getting ready to fight over it.
They do not need to win, to 'win' just be close enough for doubt.
My personal project has been checking that people I know personally are registered to vote. Second to that reinforcing my involvement in local community groups since, if things get bad we will need those networks. In the early days of the pandemic we created some good networks to do things like distribute food, and assist older people who live alone. That's dropped off a bit, and it needs to be revived.
But shouldn't there be something coming from Democrats?
@lowqualityfacts Wait wait wait... Bill Clinton took his stepfathers name, Clinton. His stepfather was abusive and Bill notoriously hated him.
One of the key survivors of the Salem Witch Trials is Rachel Clinton...
Now IF Bill went back in time, he could make sure she didn't survive - and with that remove the Clinton line AND therefor rid himself of his stepfather!! AHA!
