@futurebird @sashin @Bron1954 Unscientific experiment: Many years ago, a section of my house siding was replaced, revealing many carpenter ants. Just to see what would happen, I scooped a few dozen into a plastic bag and put them into the freezer… Took that bag out into sunlight a year later, and was amazed to see about a third revived. Back in the freezer the survivors went for another year, then again into sunlight, and about a third of those revived! Tough little things, eh?

@futurebird @sashin @Bron1954 Nope. It was in warm weather.

Exciting ant queen collecting trip in AZ. Why does it feel like all the coolest ants are in the South and South West. It's not fair.

@SapoconchaTradutora @futurebird @kechpaja 😹 Heh! Reminds me of a time when I simply could not find a REALLY LOUD cricket CHIRPING AWAY in our kitchen. Finally located it in the metal echo chamber of an empty tea kettle sitting right on the counter. 🤦‍♂️

iDGS ,
@iDGS@mas.to avatar

@futurebird @SapoconchaTradutora @kechpaja Well, in admiration and recognition of his cricket genius, I did at least carry him in that vessel of honor to the great outdoors and set him free.

🦗💨

…Plus, ever since, I ALWAYS keep the lid on that kettle! 🤣

UPDATE: NY Governor Kathy Hochul said on CNN last night that she is considering a ban on masks.

This is absolutely shameful! New York has suffered so much from COVID, and COVID is not over. We should be normalizing and depoliticizing masks, not banning them.

    @luckytran Called & left message: No mask ban, please. Masks are helping keep school bus drivers healthy, while lots of kids coming aboard are coughing, sneezing, and having all kinds of respiratory issues but get sent to school anyway. Many drivers and attendants who don’t mask up are getting ill, paying a high price for “freedom.”

    But what about our freedom of choice—to do the smart thing?

    I had the eusocial cat dream again. Perhaps it is better described as a reoccurring nightmare! Basically everyone had these cat colonies— but the cats were super intelligent— on the colony level and manipulating global politics.

    What’s your reoccurring dream?

    iDGS ,
    @iDGS@mas.to avatar

    @futurebird Been a while… For years, would occasionally dream I could run, jump, tuck up my legs and fly low over water. Like in a go-cart, but no cart. Just tummy muscles, and skim over lakes, the ocean…

    Then one day, for real, I saw a toddler walking between his parents. Each held a hand, and as they came to a little puddle in the sidewalk, they both lifted him up by the arm they held. Kid tucked up his legs, and “flew” over that little bit of water!

    So I realized it was a very early memory!

    If you were buying a new car for a family today, what would you buy? EV preferred.

    (Please don’t say “public transit”. Yes, I’d prefer functional public infrastructure too, and resent the need to own a car, but I live in America.)

    iDGS ,
    @iDGS@mas.to avatar

    @GottaLaff @ben FWIW, wife bought the all-electric Ford Mach-E Mustang a coupla years ago. She loves it. We had Ford’s fastest charger (level-3) installed at home, giving ~ +10%/hr.

    Issues:
    • Last Fall a software update “bricked” the car. Luckily, in our garage. AAA got it out and to local dealer for fix.
    • Flat/touchscreen controls—I’m not a fan. Gimme tactile, to keep eyes safely on the road.
    • Range: meh.

    Quibbles:
    • Seats don’t tilt.
    • Door handles cup upward—fills w/ ice & snow.
    • etc…

    As woman who loves ants and loves capturing them on video I've lusted after the "Laowa 24mm f/14 2X Macro Probe" camera lens for three years. It costs. $1.5k

    Now there is a knock off probe lens "AstrHori 28mm F13 Probe Lens 2X Macro" for about half the price. Really it's still too expensive.

    Maybe I could ... rent a lens and try it out?

    I don't think it would be useful for my pet ants, but for shooting in the wild? It could be amazing.

    Anyone use these? Feelings?

    @futurebird I wonder if maybe reaching out to other science and nature filmmakers for info might be useful? https://www.google.com/search?q=science+and+nature+movies+about+ants

    @futurebird Also, maybe adding keyword hashtags at the end of such queries might give them further reach.

    @iDGS@mas.to avatar

    @futurebird Also, not me, but people out there do go-fund-me, kickstarter, etc. campaigns to raise funds for all kinds of things.
