Is this a creepy idea for a school assignment or a cool idea?

Make Your Own Doomsday Library

You are going to live in space, or in a bunker and you will only have the materials you can assemble on a 1GB hard drive. Make a list of the books and materials you would bring and assemble your emergency library.

Optional: Create a device for reading your library that will last as long as possible.

It's an interesting exercise and might even be useful.

@futurebird definitely depends on the kid, but I think my friends and I would have been intrigued (you teach tweens/early teens if I recall)

I think it would be a great opportunity for Prison Fellowship or other orgs that support people in prison to do a lil fund raiser where they will send the former president a care pack with some of their helpful pamphlets on surviving prison life. (But mostly it'd be about raising money for ordinary prisoners.)

Maybe the innocence project could get in on it too, whilst making it clear that "though innocent people sometimes go to prison, guilty people do too"

I'd donate.

@futurebird I been saying... My birthday is July 11th, and I honestly don't want to ask for anything more than the sentence he richly deserves...

I will gladly donate too

::"It is strange to me that so many humans do not have a colony, or live in fear of losing their colony. Now I would never claim ants are perfect--" (this last was manifestly false) "--but, every ant on Myrmecos has her colony. We do have orphans, true, but they are still-- well, they are ants! They are a part of the colony of all of us, of all ants. An ant would never worry about not having a place to call her home. Human life seems filled with pointless stress. I could never tolerate it."

The time genie will bring back one (1) extinct animal from any time in all of earth's history. The animal will be integrated into an ecosystem seamlessly with no major negative consequences. You get to pick the creature.

Do you feel obligated to pick something like a sauropod just so people can experience the awe?

Do you bring back something more recent to correct the crimes of mankind?

Or are you selfish and you ask for hell ants so you can finally see how their mandibles work?

These AI SEO spam operations have used lists of common searches to ensure that their pages come up first in searches in the “long fat tail” the kind of search where it used to be about 50/50 if you’d find a page addressing your needs. But, it used to be if you found something like “The top 15 smallest ants in the world” it wouldn’t be nonsense. It’d either exist and be the work of another person who cared OR you found nothing. Not so now! I can’t possibly over-stress how bad this is! 1/

I traced some of my frustration back to the confrontation I had with the unleashed dog owner at Bolsa Chica last month. I know I did the right thing in calling him out but I also knew I was powerless. To protect the birds or do anything about a-holes who ignore the rules (and there are a bunch of them out there). I hate to admit it took a lot out of me.

seawall ,
@seawall@mastodon.nz avatar

@Jgbird I get it. I hate confrontation too, even when (especially when?) it's around something I know is right and feel strongly about.

So night terrors, sleep paralysis etc. seem to be a real thing. I've had "bad dreams" but never anything that sounds like these experiences. It sounds like it's scary. Scary like when you are home alone and hear a sound and don't know what it is.

I'm curious if people who can have this are can be aware that it's not real when it's happening.

When I get anxious I can also know "this is just that thing" and I'm sort of detached about it?

Can that happen with fear?

seawall ,
@seawall@mastodon.nz avatar

@futurebird most of what I know about night terrors is from comedian Mike Birbiglia, who was interviewed on NPR and also has at least one Netflix special focused around it

I wonder who the first person was who figured out they could send a message home to their family... when they were on a long journey by taking some of the pigeons they raised with them and letting them go?

I bet the first message was just the bird itself. "When I get to the mountains I will release Lisa, when I reach the amber fields I will release Ahmed."

But then they learned to give the birds little parcels to carry.

Maybe the birds were raised for meat, or as pets... or both.

seawall ,

@futurebird I'm sure this was covered in this book, I'll try and find my copy https://shop.nypl.org/products/a-pocket-guide-to-pigeon-watching

I can see some advantages to knowing if someone has autism if they are in school. But, I don't see the benefit for adults. Provided they are generally happy and coping with life OK.

It does seem to be something that people find valuable and helpful, so I'm missing something I think.

seawall ,
@seawall@mastodon.nz avatar

@futurebird @sidereal Yeah, when I went back to school to study hairdressing, and got dx'd ADHD shortly after (suspect I'm AuDHD tho), I confided about it to a classmate who'd talked about her dyslexia, and she was like "Don't mention it in an interview, or ever if you get hired, they'll think you're defective." Soooo... Yeah. 🙁

Some claiming CDC was forced to weaken isolation guidelines as many people in the US don't have enough paid sick leave so no one is isolating.

This is poor excuse. Weakening guidance only makes it harder to pass sick leave polices because politicians will say it isn't needed anymore.

Just texted my cousin who lives in OH. found out she "isn't certain" if she's registered to vote or not. She's an army doctor. She has SOMANY degrees.

She's an organized smart person and volunteers. She also finds politics boring, stressful, depressing, etc.

But with me bugging her she'll vote. She knows.

If you put up with my posts you find politics interesting. (even if you also find it depressing, stressful etc.) That is not normal. Most people don't like politics.

Nag a cousin today!

seawall ,
@seawall@mastodon.nz avatar

@futurebird they REALLY don't! Average people just really do not think about politics much at all. Hence why shit keeps getting worse. Here in NZ people "just wanted a change" and now we're sliding into our own George W Bush era 😩

Flaco, an Eurasian eagle owl that escaped from the Central Park zoo is still flying around and living in the park. Several of my coworkers have seen him and I always look out for the bird.

Flaco has been eating rats and seems to like city life. He seems to live on the upper west side, impressive that a bird can swing the rent in that neighborhood.
