Last I've checked, Russia was totally in favor of killing civilians. It's in their power to end the war if they now have a change of heart regarding collateral damage.

I'm really curious who at AMD thought it to be a great idea to develop a CUDA compatibility layer but not to release it. As stated, the release was only made because AMD ended financial support.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

So does it work with off the shelf software or is it something the developer has the patch in?

The point of a drop-in replacement is that no patching is required but in reality the software was released in incomplete form.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I really don’t get their thought process. It’s surreal.

Maybe they see it as something that would undermine their effords in increasing ROCm/HIP adoption? (But why fund its development for two years then? I agree with you: It all seems so weird!)

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

The problem is that if we make CUDA the standard, then they put nVidia in control of a standard. nVidia could try to manipulate the situation in future versions of CUDA by reworking it to fuck with this implementation, giving AMD a shaky name in the space.

I get that but why woulde they fund development of ZLUDA for two years?

Pretty much anyone interested knew that unofficially, we would be getting initial Wayland support by XFCE 4.20 later this year, but seeing it confirmed makes me very happy!

Maybe I'm overlooking something but where in https://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.20/roadmap did you see a 2024 confirmation?

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I remember it being mentioned somewhere (not sure where anymore, it was quite a while ago)

So your "seeing it confirmed" statement was not about seeing it confirmed in the submission you made a comment about?

GitLab is becoming more and more like GitHub.

Well, duh. That's the sales pitch: "Like GitHub, but cheaper."

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Except it’s way more expensive than GitHub. They jacked up the prices pretty hard. Now it’s like $15/contributor for private orgs, and it’s like $5 on GitHub for the same and more features.

Free for self-hosting, though.

Nürnberg: Tiergarten will Paviane töten ( www.spiegel.de ) German

iTunes api, and if apple turns evil there are other list-o-cast apis like fyyd.de.

Whoever downvoted this has no clue. The Apple Podcast directory is currently unrestricted for any podcatcher to crawl and to get the RSS feeds. That may change at some point but for now it's actually the best maintained RSS feed directory. The aforementioned fyyd.de is a good but less complete alternative. It relies of community submissions. fyyd.de itself is not an open source service, though.

they wanted to create a website according to certain rules rather than a free for all.

Let's stick to facts, OK? They claimed defederating from lemmy.world and such was a temporary measure because of the lack of moderation tools and because LW allows anyone to sign up, opening the flood gates for bots, and those sites would of course be unbanned when changes were made. Changes were made. LW and others are still banned. BH were lying from the beginning. Good riddance.

Matrix, the protocol, is quite nice.

Element, the Matrix reference client, is too complicated IMO. If everyone were to only use FluffyChat, it would be great but then FluffyChat afaik doesn't implement every protocol feature and and you could end up in compatibility issues with Element users.

Purely as a client I find Telegram the most convenient. I think more should copy their homework from there, heck perhaps post the client to Matrix.

If saving six characters is so crucial, type ".0", ".1", and ".2". Massive productivity boost.

You could also drop the “.” in this case, saving another three.

Even better: drop the number.

I just love how professional the Lemmy instances have become.

Too bad upstream Lemmy development didn't adapt. The early 0.19 releases left several big instances hanging with severe bugs leaving them practically unusable.

So LW is helping build it???

Don't expect Lemmy.World to ever switch to it, though. Ruud sets up a new server for each bit of fediverse software. That's why Calckey.World will not migrate to the Sharkey fork of that software and its users will only get encouraged to move over on their own.

Distrobox: If AppImage isn't already enough overhead for you, just install an entire Linux distribution for each application.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure what the hard-on is for containerization.

Bazzite uses Steam in an Arch-based Distrobox container. The FAQ doesn't address what the benefits of that over just using Flatpak are.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

The Flatpak has some weird permission problems for example. If I want to give it access to my application folder via Flatseal, it just doesn’t want to start anymore.

You're already providing better information than the official FAQ but that doesn't explain why it's an Arch container of all things, considering that Steam on Linux runs off the home directory and the binary from the package manager is just the first-time download manager. And if a container was to be used why Arch, given that officially only supports Ubuntu LTS, SteamOS as shipped on Steam Deck, and whatever container guest Steam on ChromeOS uses, not "plain" Arch.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

We stopped doing this a few versions ago

And how are you deploying Steam now? Any chance for easily discoverable documentation about such things?

It’s layered into the image like any other rpm. Standard steam package you’d install in Workstation.

Good, considering Steam updates itself anyway.
