My job didn’t even require a video interview, this unpaid role has more strict requirements than half the jobs in the US haha.

It's an IT job for a role with big responsibility. Unpaid or not, the role is the role. Filling up the shelves in a grocery store comes with a bit less responsibility.

Russian Maya Guchmazova, who represented Georgia.

So pathetic that all over professional sports, Russians are just able to declare they represent different countries (or the neutral flag) and just continue.

now you’re complaining she doesn’t like you?

A hand shake is usually mandatory in fencing tournaments. I think it was initially weakened as part of distancing rules during Covid but the rules are still in place: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/27/world/europe/ukraine-fencer-olga-kharlan-russia.html

@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I too wouldn’t shake the hands of a person who’s from the country currently invading, pillaging, and raping my land and its people.

I'm not saying that I would. I was explaining that since covid there is precedent to allow not shaking hands.

fedia: No. Registrations are closed.

Thanks for the correction, DarkThoughts. Seems there were enough donations do reopen registrations. 👍

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not. https://fedia.io/register

They certainly removed the register link from the header bar and at some point announced that to keep server costs in check, registrations would be closed. I don't know if you can successfully submit a registration when opening that address directly but considering that the admins don't want additional users for understandable reasons, I'm not going to try what happens.

Edit: Oh the register link is there under the login window. Seems they reversed their decision, maybe after enough donations arrived. Very good.

this is an amazing step towards safety and security for Moldova.

Looking at how the EU dealt with Cyprus: Nothing will change. All of Cyprus is EU member, yet the EU happily accepts Turkish occupation in the northern half.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I think this is a little different as (Greek) Cyprus joined after the island had already been divided

So exactly like Transnistria?

It is made to replace ClamTK and check that box for people wanting to use Linux.

Why does it look like a Windows 10 application then? (Even Win11 gave up on that UX.)

Sure but at Microsoft they fire people based on dice rolls

I can’t help but feel sorry for these guys, some of whom must surely just have been forcefully conscripted into this.

Once they get a gun, they decide where to point it!

Don’t forget the humans, I guess.

Don't forget who the fascist, murderous aggressors are!

The code compiles 1:1 back into a unable ROM but isn’t made just using a source code leak. It is reverse-engineered just like the SM64 decomp

Decompilation means it's still derived from copyrighted source code. It's not a clean-room implementation where one person analyzes the engine, writes documentation about details of that engine, and a completely different person writes a new engine. It's not even a grey area. The correct procedure is clear ever since back in the day "IBM compatible" were created.

If it were up to me, copyrights would work like patents: After 25 years they're void and people would be completely in the clear to decompile, modify, and redistribute old games. Sadly that's not the reality.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Nintendo has not taken action on the massively popular SM64 Decompilation and PC ports (and ironically switch ports) in the past what…3 years?

Nintendo hadn't taken action against ROM sites for even more years (I was able to download NES, Game Boy, and SNES ROMs in the 1990s) and then decided to make an example of only one in 2019. Just because something is not on the radar of lawyers in Japan right now, doesn't mean a law suit over millions could not come any day.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

It looks like the project is really careful not to include copyrighted materials in their distribution.

Source code automatically generated from copyrighted binary code is a derivative of copyrighted code, though. It's like taking a copyrighted book and running it through Google Translate and then clean up the sentences manually. You could be lucky that a publisher might not care about a translation into Icelandic but if you were to auto-translate a French version of a book into English and try to distribute it in the US, you'd probably get in trouble even if you leave out all graphic artwork.

Even if the US sat on the sidelines, the European parts of NATO would still be formidable.

You mean the parts of Europe that has been taken hostage by Orban?

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

At least someone in Europe has balls.

Has he? Pretty sure he said that blowing up dams would be considered on par with use of WMDs and then Russians blew up several dams and there were no further consequences.

Give the mod creators time to update their work and it will be fine.

Depending how serious a game developer takes its modders, the way to achieve exactly that is by releasing a beta.

Die schwere Deutsche Sprache ist wahrscheinlich der größte Grund.

Ja schlimm aber auch diese Sprache, die in der EU die meisten Muttersprachler hat und in vielen europäischen Ländern Amtssprache ist.

According to some narratives NATO wants war and Ukraine suffers from NATO warmongering.

It's hopefully needless to say that this utter BS.

Meta to close Threads in Turkey to comply with injunction prohibiting data sharing with Instagram ( techcrunch.com )

Meta said on Monday that it plans to “temporarily” shutter Threads in Turkey from April 29, in response to an interim injunction imposed by the Turkish competition authority last month over the way Meta shares data between Threads and Instagram....

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

This seems like a reasonable thing to require of services that aren’t dependent on each other for basic functionality.

They don't. All Meta/Facebook services can be decoupled since the EU enforces the DMA gatekeeper status. Meta just needs to add Turkey to the same decoupling whitelist as the EU countries, and the issue is immediately solved.

Immediately biases the reader before any actual information is given about the change

As someone who has the "pleasure" to be selected as beta tester for YouTube changes all the time, I fully agree with the headline because I also have immediate bias when they change something. Every single time it has been awful and more often than not I get outright broken changes which is why I have a user agent changer installed to switch to an ancient Edge user agent when affected because YT's legacy UI often doesn't get the same changes.

Also, I'm a YT Premium subscriber. I'm not paying to be a beta tester.

What we really need is a Schism, and for all the ml domains to defederate from the rest of the lemmyverse, and just become their own thing.

But due its size, it's also full of regular people. !linux is a good Linux community. Why block the entire instance when the Mao fanboys are just active in certain politics communities?

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

You can move a community with all subscribers? How? Does this work if the server was already defederated? Why defederate an entire server if only specific communities are problematic? Just block those.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

And that statement is one nobody can read because the server has already been defederated. Doesn't sound like the best idea. Just block the Mao fanboy communities you don't like. Definitely a lower impact than blocking sane communities on that server like !Linux for everyone.

XMPP as used in the enterprise communication product my employer uses (AFAIK based on the common open source implementation) sucks as much on mobile as Xabber which I used back in the day. I get notifications 30 minutes late if at all. That thing killed itself by not adapting to smartphones.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a bad implementation then. Modern open-source XMPP works great on mobile

The issue was the state of mobile clients when XMPP died in the mainstream and state of the art was crap like Xabber. Conversations was better but too little, too late.

iOS is more of a mixed bag, but that is solely Apple’s fault and applies to all messengers other than iMessage.

Telegram works flawlessly pretty much everywhere, including iOS which my mom uses.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Well, Monal on iOS doesn’t work worse than Telegram on iOS, so then apparently it’s flawless as well.

Again: The current state is irrelevant when discussing the time frame when Google allegedly killed it. The state of Jabber and its clients was just abhorrently bad back in the day. That was the reason the world moved to WhatsApp. Google Talk has always been a niche product. That's why it's dead.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not dead, and works fine.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/532b51bd-792d-4ab6-88a5-845e531967be.png

Also WhatsApp is using a slightly modified version of XMPP

Obviously modified enough to work better with mobile when it launched than Jabber's state of the art back then.

Again: Google did not kill Jabber. Jabber achieved its downfall on its own by being bettered by proprietary services that just worked better on mobile devices BACK THEN.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Google Talk was never Jabber. The Google Jabber integration was way before that in Gmail. Google Talk was what came after Google decided to abandon Jabber.

Wikipedia says otherwise.

If Google had actually supported Jabber instead of sabotaging it, we would not have this discussion.

Google kills messaging services all the time and launches new, incompatible ones. Google did not sabotage Jabber, they sabotage their own chat services all the time.
