The implications of this change in the inner core’s movement for Earth’s surface can only be speculated. Vidale said the backtracking of the inner core may alter the length of a day by fractions of a second: “It’s very hard to notice, on the order of a thousandth of a second, almost lost in the noise of the churning oceans and atmosphere.”

The USC scientists’ future research aspires to chart the trajectory of the inner core in even greater detail to reveal exactly why it is shifting.

“The dance of the inner core might be even more lively than we know so far,” Vidale said.

How about a clapper board icon? The community isn’t limited to movies, so a clapperboard could encapsulate both movies and television.

The actual total two-way communication distance between Zhang and his patient was more than 20,000km, a considerable challenge since longer distances can cause more latency, or delay, between the surgeon’s console in one location, and the response of the robotic arms at the other location.

In this case, China’s 5G telecommunication network helped to lower the delay to a 135 millisecond latency, less that the 200 millisecond latency that various studies have identified as ideal for telesurgery.

I never would have guessed Cyber Surgeon could be on the Work From Home bingo card.

fediverse platform for a schools community network

I am looking to host a fediverse platform for a community of non-tech people. These people use mostly ig and some still fb. These people are from a network of schools which are ideologically aligned with libre software and decentralisation. It will include adults and also teenagers, who mostly use IG. This is part of a plan of a...

Semi-related but I was thinking about this earlier this year, and I was wondering about the feasibility of posting bus cancellations via the fediverse instead of via a bussing company’s website or email.

So, it's clear that a small subpopulation is preferentially tweeting links to sources of misinformation, and for many users, they're the most significant source of exposure to these sites. So who are these people?

They're a bit more likely to be female. While both the comparison groups were roughly evenly split between male and female, the superspreaders were 60 percent female. They're also older, on average 58 years old, nearly 20 years older than the sample as a whole. And, while much of the misinformation about the election largely circulated within Republican circles, only 64 percent of the superspreaders were registered Republicans (nearly 20 percent were registered as Democrats).

Bdesign thought that the cut was small, like a paper cut, until blood started spurting out from the wound. The Tesla inspectors who were there and even described that the vehicle "can be dangerous" panicked but helped.

‘Has this guy ever made a movie before?’ Francis Ford Coppola’s 40-year battle to film Megalopolis ( www.theguardian.com )

Cast members including Adam Driver have spoken positively of their experience on the film, but, according to other sources, its making was almost as fraught and chaotic as that of Apocalypse Now. Much time and effort was allegedly wasted, crucial crew members quit halfway through and Coppola made things even more complicated by...

“When you’re this old guy dying, you don’t wanna say: ‘I wish I had done that and that.’ In my case, I did it. I did all the things other people would just regret that they didn’t try. Because, in the end, you die. You don’t get any award for just being conservative.”

If I had the same funding, I’d feel as nonchalant about failure.

as reported in Vietnam.net, it's possible Steam has been taken down in Vietnam after local game developers complained about the scope and size of Steam's vast portfolio of games, claiming Vietnamese devs cannot compete with Steam's releases given they are subject to government approval and thousands of international games on Steam are not.

Citing it as "an injustice to domestic publishers", Vietnamese studios reportedly say that local game development "will die" if Steam is able to keep releasing games without the same government scrutiny as domestic games.

According to this analysis—and, I have to warn you, it’s kinda funny—liberals and conservatives have markedly different facial morphology. Liberals have “smaller lower faces” and “lips and noses [that] are shifted downward,” and chins that “are smaller” than conservatives, researchers write. Researchers repeat the key conclusion later on: “liberals tended to have smaller faces.”

So, according to this theory, if you have a tiny face, you’re probably a progressive. Or, by contrast, if you have a big fat face, there’s a good chance you might be a Trump voter.

During that committee, the Conservatives proposed 19,600 amendments to the 18-page bill. That number decreased to 200 once the bill left committee and headed back to the House of Commons.

Government House leader Steven MacKinnon said Thursday those amendments were "robo-amendments created by AI."

[Conservative Leader Pierre] Poilievre now will have to have his members come here and vote for as long as it takes on a couple of hundred amendments that survived that robo-amendment process that they admitted was undertaken by artificial intelligence, by robot caucus members and robot parliamentarians," he said.

99% of the amendments were actual GPT-fluff.

My favourite unironic quotes from the article:

“He likely experienced cognitive dissonance when I presented him with some of the up-to-date data on the pandemic and COVID-19 management,” Matyas wrote. “Cognitive dissonance can result when people hold a core belief that is very strong … The respondent (patient) is likely a very strong believer in the COVID vaccines being the only possible saviour of humanity in this pandemic.”

Matyas took exception to the professor’s suggestion that he was spreading misinformation: “Everything I quoted to him are published facts and I encourage him to develop a little scientific curiously and humility about what he thinks he knows in the field of medical science.”

How do you read novels?

These past few months I've come back to reading novels for the first time, really, since I was a kid. I just read them an alternative to scrolling, though, so I don't really pay much attention. When I sit down to watch a film, I try to make sure my mind is clear, my environment is undistracting, and I try to watch observantly...

I wouldn’t say I’m an experienced reader, however I’ve been in a similar predicament trying to get back into reading.

On my iPhone I set up a focus mode that promotes reading during hours I’m typically at home with free time. What I’ve done is set a large reading widget front and center on the page with reading companion apps underneath with all of my social media/video apps are out of sight.

As for goals, I don’t really make any until I’ve had a couple books finished otherwise I force myself into finishing rather than concentrating on the material.

At launch, Google's VP of Real Estate & Workplace Services, David Radcliffe, said the site "marks the first time we developed one of our own major campuses, and the process gave us the chance to rethink the very idea of an office." The result is a wild tent-like structure with a striking roofline made up of swooping square sections.

In other words, they erected themselves a circus tent. Ironic.

What do you use to track your reading?

Hello all! I mostly use StoryGraph (my name is creadstoomuch if you wanna be friends), but I was wondering what other options y'all have found that work for you.
