By withholding a ruling on Trump v. United States, the Supreme Court's far-right justices are effectively giving Trump the immunity he's seeking, making it all but impossible for him to face trial before the election for his efforts to overturn the election and his role in Jan 6.

@rbreich That, and even more Judge Cannon delay tactics over classified documents and spending all her time addressing chronic Republican challenges, now to the appropriateness of Jack Smith having been assigned.

Louisiana's GOP governor signed a law requiring public school classrooms to display the Ten Commandments.

Project 2025, developed by MAGA allies, has plans to infuse ‘Christian nationalism’ in a Trump second term.

Republicans are coming for the separation of church and state.

@rbreich These "Talibangelicals" have taken over Louisiana and ready to shove their version of authoritarian "religion" down everyone's throat. And I imagine they are gleefully aware of now being the ruling "status quo", as least in Louisiana.

Gov. of signed legislation requiring the be displayed in every classroom in the state.

The makes the state the only one with such a mandate & reignites the debate over how porous the boundary between & should be.

@Nonilex The "Talibangelicals" have taken over Louisiana, shoving their version of religious mythology down everyone's throat. It's an authoritarian stance, hiding under the guise of "religion". Because everyone knows that simply by mentioning "JEE-ZUSS", "Bible", "God", or randomly spout a verse from the bible then that automatically validates whatever your saying and gets you a free pass.

What's better for the environment: A paper book, or an e-reader? NPR spoke to industry experts about the rise of digital reading, how the publishing industry is reducing waste, and whether using a fossil-fuel-derived plastic e-reader is a better option than a paper book. The short answer, according to professor Mike Berners-Lee (yes, he is his brother): It depends.

@CultureDesk @bookstodon I'll admit that my wife embraced ebooks several years before I ever did. She has gone through two versions of Kindle Readers and now uses her iPad exclusively for reading Kindle ebooks. I eventually succumbed to purchasing a Kindle Paperwhite which I can easily transport and read at the beach under full sunshine, whereas her iPad has annoying glare. The best part is marking highlights to be searched & referenced later via the Amazon Kindle Notes webpage!

Tell me: how does it make sense that an entry-level federal employee is subject to more stringent ethics rules than Supreme Court justices?

Ron DeSantis signed a law that prevents municipalities in Florida from requiring that employers provide shade and water breaks for outdoor workers.

A study found that heat-related deaths in FL shot up by 88% between 2019 and 2022.

Folks, this is the GOP's vision for America.

@rbreich And then there are efforts to end child labor protection laws. The Louisiana Governor was quoted elsewhere that kids working for him didn't want to stop working for a lunch break!
Yep, let's treat our children like another disposable commodity.

Just learned that a very promising early career scientist in my discipline has left academia, not seeing a desired career future for herself here. That company is lucky to get her. Yet, it saddens me enormously that it is often the most dynamic, brilliant, curious once, who are challenging status quo, committed to diversity and making our world a better place, who are leaving .

What are we doing wrong to make academic careers so unattractive for the best young minds?

walterbobrowski ,

@TatianaIlyina I started in academic research (7 years) then did corporate research (30 years) for improved pay and benefits. It worked out well for retirement as well. But decades of antagonism & animosity between academic and corporate was palpable, notably coming from the academic side as if we were "traitors".

Four years ago today, Donald Trump suggested Americans could be injected with disinfectant to fight covid.

If anyone asks you: "Are you better off than you were four years ago," the answer is a resounding yes.

@rbreich Well, he did state for the record, “I had an uncle who went to MIT who is a top professor. Dr. John Trump. A genius. It’s in my blood. I’m smart.”

Trump’s attempted coup continues.

Phase 1: His refusal to concede.

Phase 2: His plot to overturn the election.

Phase 3: Discredit and undermine the criminal justice system to avoid accountability.

These are the three central elements of his presidential campaign. Be warned.

Remember: Most billionaires are not “self-made.” They’re made via a combination of inherited wealth, government subsidies, tax loopholes, labor exploitation, and policy failures. Can we stop perpetuating a myth that blames wealth inequality on the choices of everyday Americans?
