Unless somethkng changed in the last few years, SSDs are much much faster.

I have good memories of the cdrom era.

Shame about the undismissable AI video overlaid on the page...

So tired of AI. Can we just not?

Were zx spectrum +2 keyboards disgusting to type on?

Out of curiosity, I've been watching a few restorations of those spectrums, and I've noticed the keyboards having a rather peculiar construction, judging by today's standards. They have 2 springs, the small one, as far as I understand, presses the membrane layers together, and the larger one returns the key into neutral position...

I had a +3. At the time it was much better than rubber 48K keys.

If you are expecting cherry mx switches, you will be disappointed.

Is everything the worst?

I'm 43, almost 44, years old and went through a bought of alcoholism during the early part of the pandemic. I went through treatment and have been fine since. However, I can't help but feel that all the news in the last few months is just the worst. Between the AI bullshit, the wars, the effects of capitalism, and the political...

I find it easy to have this mindset too. Sometimes it's outright depressing.

But I think a lot of this is a result of the media having given up on reporting good news.

Try ignoring the news for a while and you may feel better.

I self host my email. I was hard work to set up. 0/10. Would not come again.

vext01 ,
@vext01@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

That's true. I did learn a lot, but the idea of setting it all up again gives me anxiety.

If you could call it an OS, ZX spectrum basic was my first. My first Linux was Slackware 6 or 7 installed from a string of floppies. Good times.

Our [New Scientist] writers pick their favourite science fiction books of all time ( www.newscientist.com )

This is an interesting list. It's missing some of the true great classics, like Frankenstein, and it has a number of unusual, less well known titles, but there's a lot to like on it. There's certainly a lot for people to disagree about, but it may well have your less often cited favorites, too. What do you think?

vext01 ,
@vext01@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Good to see a list not containing just the obvious stuff.

I've read about a third of this list, and the others sound good.

The only one I'm not sure about is flatland.

Ah, a zoom emulator. Why didn't you say?

What's a "walk in"? What's a "whip it"?

Is that a news crew huddling at the foot of it?

I knew that'd be the spin without even clicking the link.

I have friends who buy organic. I don't have the heart to tell them it's all marketing.

What the hell is this? Half way down the page it becomes a crypto advert...

Same here! ZX spectrum.

Some people report that fibreglass gets brittle and cracks. Thoughts?

GRP yeah.

Every builder I got a quote from recommended fibreglass over EDPM since we are going to have a roof lantern.

The builder I'm going to uses this system:

Same when the plane lands. You must be the first to unclip and stand. He who stands longest wins.

I was being sarcastic, in case it wasn't clear.

In case, like me, you were wondering what this has to do with ssh:

openssh does not directly use liblzma. However debian and several other
distributions patch openssh to support systemd notification, and libsystemd
does depend on lzma.

How do you manage your headphone cables?

I recently switched from wireless to wired headphones (Samson SR-850, probably the best for the very reasonable price) and my chair's wheels instantly started eating its cable. Right now I'm using a small plastic hook that came with a face mask to keep it off the floor, but I'd like to hear other solutions.

vext01 ,
@vext01@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

This is what I do. My headphone amp is on my desk, so it just worked.

A Gentleman of Leisure's EDC ( lemmy.world )

Having been forceably removed from the workforce I have been, as the godly call, blessed to become a Gentleman of Leisure. These are the indispensable tools of someone very hardily doing nothing that the capitalist class can find a way to make shilling from....

When using reolink in a self-hosted setting:

  • how do you get notifications of someone at the door?
  • can you use the android app still?
  • how do you securely store video on your server? They say they support ftps, but I have no idea how hard that is to set up. Shame they don't support sftp.

Thanks

vext01 ,
@vext01@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

With ftps, can you use a self-signed cert? If so, how does it verify the cert? Do you have to upload the public key, or does it cache it on first use?
