My regular place near work went from 4,00€ (2017) to 6,50€ (2024), size and quality unchanged as far as I can tell. Not too bad all things considered.

A series is just so practical and simple. Cut a A0 sheet in 2 at the center of the long edge, you get 2x A1, repeat you get 4x A2, etc. This also simplifies production.

First-hand reports did not make mention of the origins of the perpetrators, only that they are of similar age (12 and 13yo) and one of them the ex-boyfriend of the victim. Very horrible, no question. But, is immigration relevant to this case ? Isn't it more relevant to question why education of teenagers has failed so bad ? Why are racial and faith related aggression still a thing in a laïc state ? Why nothing concrete is being done to protect women ? Let's avoid the essay short-cuts, and instead talk about the real root-causes.

It is very sad to see. RN party really doesn't carry any values that are favorable to women in any way. They are very much fighting for blocking access to birth control and sex education. They have voted against proposal aiming to improve parity and reduce wage gapes.

Official source are kinda hard to brows, but I could find this about the latest (16th) legislature:

It's important to keep in mind that, without reading the details of the proposals, it's hard to know the reasons for voting against. Often, a proposal with a title that seems to be progressiste is voted overwhelmingly against by the left groups, because the proposal is deemed flawed or insufficient, then many amendments are proposed and voted again, and again... It's all very complicated to decipher. This small research also helped me to realize, what the news and media reporting about this in a more comprehensible way are often simplifying a lot and cherry-picking data to push a specific editorial line, and it is misleading more often than not.

The game has very complex lore and it's super interesting. For instance 2B and 9S have to follow many rules from the Commander. To learn more search for "2B rule34".

HP tied thermal shutdown to Windows, meaning it doesn't work on Linux. ( imgur.com )

My HP All-In-One 20-c081nt has the processor Intel Core i3-6100U, which is supposed to not run hotter than 100C. On Windows if 100C is reached, the screen will fade out and PC will immediately shutdown. A warning will be shown at next boot. On Linux, seen in the video, the PC will simply keep running as if nothing has happened...

You are saying, you are using your computer normally and it will reach temperature so high it needs to self-shutdown ?
Either your laptop needs a good cleaning, maybe if it's very old replacing the thermal past, or this is really a terrible design flaw.

Except when the unplugged cable lays prongs-up and you stab your foot by stepping on it. E and F are clearly superior. The switch on the socket will not convince me otherwise.

Sorry, but Les Républicains are not "center-right", they are definitely very-right, they campaign on the same topics than the extreme-right and share a lot of points in their programs.

The new Front Populaire regroups a fairly wide variety of parties, from the the far left revolutionary communists like NPA, radical left with PCF and LFI, until the center like Les Socialistes (social Democrats) and Ecologists. Last Sunday, they were divided and dragging each other in the mud, today they have 1) signed to campaign as one, 2) decided the candidates for each county, 3) agreed on a very detailed common program for the next 2~3 years.

The vote takes place on 30th of June, therefore the political landscape of France will continue to shift frenetically for the next 2 weeks at least.

It is surprising everyone, including left voters. I don't think Macron considered this outcome seriously when he made his play to dismiss the national parliament. Most likely he was counting on the "Republican blockade" (it's kind of a tradition at this point) to draw all the center to his cause (this would have included, Green, Socialists and the traditional right of Republicans).

Instead, Les Republicains instantly imploded when their leader Eric Ciotti declared we wants to ally with the RN (leading extreme-right party), he got unanimously banned from his party. Another extreme-right party, Reconquête also failed to rally to RN (this is another crazy story, mixing family relations and betrayal). And the left in the most broad sense, is as united as ever, in a unions that seems much more serious and solid than precious failed attempts, giving (my feeling) a lot of hope for voters attached to democracy and justice.

In a nutshell there are 3 possible outcomes we can summarize in Macron's perspective:

  1. Republican blockage: Macron gets again majority in the assembly, he is reaffirmed as the legitimate leader of the country and he can continue the same government and policies. **Macron wins **
  2. Rassemblement National (RN) wins the parliament: Macron is the last standing defense against fascism in France, he will use his powers to veto and block the policies of RN, use this as an opportunity to display RN as incapable of governing, putting him and his party in a favorable position for the next presidential elections in 2027. Macron wins
  3. Le Partie Populaire wins the parliament: Macron cannot govern, he will use his powers to block the policies of the left, these measures are in large part about reversing the unpopular policies he passed in the passed 5 years (often without vote: 49-3), this will discredit him and his party. Macron looses

About the power of the hardware, you don't need to worry too much. My NAS is a SBC with 6 ARM cores and 4GB or RAM. It run flawlessly all the services you've listed and more ! (Also, without transcoding for jellyfin).

I don't know if your budget includes Hard disks, but it should be plenty enough to get you an ready made NAS from Synology or other brands, that will give you an easy start with self-hosting.

If you want to go the DIY route. Then I recommend to build yourself a small computer from a Intel N100 motherboard, or the older J5040. From there you can install Open Media Vault, or otherwise the Linux distribution you are the most familiar with, and install Docker. You can check Linuxserver.io for many guides for spinning up docker containers for all of the services you've listed.

Why do posters say that increase in Linux Steam share doesnt count becuase its mostly steam deck users?

It's not the gotcha that they think it is. Increasing share of Linux, steam deck or not is progress. Any development or considerations made for the SteamDeck and its Arch based OS benefit the non SteamDeck Linux gaming scene too....

ChromeOS is not counted as Linux for the same reasons Android isn't counted as Linux and MacOS isn't counted as BSD. Those are proprietary, locked-down operating systems. It contrasts with what is broadly understund as Linux, meaning Linux distributions that adhere to some kind of FOSS philosophy.

Corporates are even bold enough to brand this as a nice to have feature, they call it "find my device" I think? But we can totally trust them to keep this data absolutely private and secure ! /s

Well, e2e encryption doesn't give you any guaranty if the encryption and communication protocols are proprietary and you didn't set the encryption key(s) all by yourself. Samsung could very well have the private keys to decrypt the data and give it to anyone they wish.

Because the French voting system is flawed, the politicians are corrupt and the choices we are given to vote for presidents are anything between ultra liberal capitalism and full-on fascism...

synapse1278 ,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

I've not missed a single vote since I'm 18yo, but I understand people who are too fed up to go vote, sadly...

synapse1278 ,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

You sound like some who has never voted.

Last time, I forced myself to vote for Mister Money-for-the-rich despite the fact I hate everything he wrote in his program, I thought I was doing the right thing by participating to "blockade" Miss Nazis-did-nothing-wrong.

Well, just a few months later, it was the elections for parlement représentants and the winning president and his "Party of rich", they just fucked all of us right up in any circonscriptions they got eliminated, they just stated publicly "don't vote for the commies ! They are a danger for the democracy ! (Vote for the Nazis instead, we like their ideas better, but you didn't hear it from me lol".

Now we have Mr Money-for-the-rich as president and Party of rich has the most sits (but no majority) and they are the danger for democracy as every time they fail to vote a law they proposed to fuck us deeper (despite getting help from all the racists on the right side of the room), they use a loop-hole to make it law without vote.

So, yes. I understand someone who doesn't want to get up and queue 2 hours on a Sunday morning to go vote for a person who will ultimately humiliate you at every occasion he has.

You might be projecting yourself a little bit too much here, my friend. I am a voter, I never missed a vote in my life since I am 18yo. And I don't know what you're on about with your 4-chan copy-pasta.

I am a victim of the network effect who wishes to degoogle. What do I do?

This post is going to be a bit personal (and maybe a little bit out of context, it's not just Google software I want to remove) but I'm tired of not knowing what to do about it. I want and have wanted to get rid of a bunch of proprietary software in my life, including but not limited to Google's software, for quite a while now,...

synapse1278 ,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

You can offer your friends the option to use Signal for messaging. It's not a big deal to use several apps for messaging different people.

I don't know how old you are or were you live, but it just sounds crazy to me your parents want to know your location at all time, it seems paranoid. Maybe there are other "location sharing" apps out there, but they are by definition not very privacy oriented, not sure if I would trust another app more than Google-Maps...

synapse1278 ,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

OP clearly state in the post "it's not just Google I want to remove, but proprietary Software". Going from GrapheneOS to iOS would be a giant leap backwards in that regard.

I already have spin-down setup, I can definitely tell when they are spinning up, especially the 7200rpm one. I don't think it is possible to slow-down the rotation speed of the hard disks, I believe they are just designed to operate at a given speed.

I suppose the "low-cost consumer grade" market is now covered by SSDs and the HDD market is moving towards enterprise and enthusiasts only. There is not much market remaining for "lower performance" HDD...

synapse1278 OP ,

I suppose 5640 RPM wouldn't make much of a difference compared to 5400, although I've never came across such hard disk. I will keep an eye on external drive options, thanks.

synapse1278 OP ,

Thank you for the suggestions, but this isn't quite what I am looking for. Moving the NAS to another room isn't an option, bedroom and bathroom are even less suitable for a NAS :D

I don't wish to modify the appearance of it either. For one, I've spent quite a lot of time designing and building the enclosure from scratch (it's a unique and original design from my creation). Then, it sits in my TV cabinet and space is an additional concern.

synapse1278 OP ,

Thanks, I will look for surveillance types of disks.

Living room is my only option.

If I were to rework the drive mounting solution, I would probably redo the whole case from scratch. Currently the drives are slotted inside 5.25" bays and theses are assembled together with 3D printed brackets. I have the impression vibration are not transferring too much to the case and outside.

Maybe I can find some rubber damper that would fit around the drives inside the 5.25" bays.
