Occasionally mastodon servers go down. When they do I wish there was a more clear way to communicate with users.

Recently I thought maybe I should write a script to pull the list of emails from the server so I could occasionally message them. Is that something that would make sense for downtime messages?

What do other folk do?

Infinite scroll is a blessing and a curse, combined with algorithms, they can become quite addictive.

That is the whole point of developing a project right, for people to actually use it, and the most possible?

I know, there are detriments to encouraging excessive use, but we shouldn't ignore the fact that algorithms and infinite scroll are here to stay.

The question with @loops is, how we can encourage the most healthy use?

@dansup @loops One problem with the tiktok algorithm is how it does not create strong connections between creator and viewer. I think social sites that do not center that relationship fall short.

The number of active Mastodon accounts continues to drop, including here on Infosec.exchange, however it’s dropping slower than elsewhere. According to https://fedidb.org/software/mastodon we are the number 4 (soon to be number 3) most active instance. I’m not sure whether to be happy or sad.

@jerry lots of interesting responses to this. Twitter always seemed to have terrible retention. Mastodon does not have any tool for engaging with lapsed users.

I find myself using the same hashtags for my interests, over and over. However, there doesn't seem to be an app, so far, that allows me to have a list of frequently used tags so I don't have to retype them for every single post...

How is this not a thing yet? I've been BEGGING for a "Hashtag Drawer" type feature in apps for AGES now...🤦‍♂️

@BeAware @futurebird I've thought of wanting this as well! I wonder if this could be built as a browser extensions.. but also this is one of the things I keep thinking would work great as a mastodon plugin if they ever added plugin support.
