...with the specific purpose of threatening, harassing, and doxing, mainly targeting transgender / queer users. This is not the first I have heard, nor the only instances I have heard of being hit with this.

A few weeks ago we ran a poll asking your opinions about bots & spam on the Fediverse.
A 38% majority said that some features help combat bots, but it's not enough.
When we saw our process automatically deflect the bots in the Spam Wave, we knew we could help. That's why we're working with other instances to build a set of tools for admins and moderators.

Today seems like a good day to repost this blog post for our users. And especially these bits:

This server is now running Mastodon 4.2.8... that includes crucial new features to combat recent spam attacks.
These include turning off open registration on sites not actively moderated, simpler support for Captchas, and defaulting new servers to not be open, instant registration.
These features mostly don't affect us, as we continue to require approval for user signups, but great to see this version launched quickly and rolling out.
The SPAM wave has caused ppl to beg for server providers to start acting like police officers, like a Zuckerberg or Musk, to resolve the issue
The problem is that now action is being taken without consent from the perceived affected servers. On #MastoHost, a moderation-task automation script has been run. And now we've opened a Pandora's box about what sorts of future, nonconsensual interventions, that providers will allow themselves.
I am strongly considering moving away from Mastodon in the medium to long term future because of Eugen's absolutely abysmal handling of the spam situation and lack of prioritization of proper mod tooling.

Aber etwas "Bumbs" darf er haben. Ich brauche 32 GB RAM und einen "Tacken" flotter als mein aktueller "Intel Core i5" wรคre schon nicht schlecht. Am besten alle Komponenten in einem Bundle bereits zusammengestellt. Ich hab nicht mehr den รberblick, was an Hardware mit wem spielt oder kรคmpft. Zusammenschrauben kann ich dann selbst, wรคre aber nicht traurig, wenn das schon erledigt ist ๐ - Ach, und das Maschinchen muss Linux kรถnnen - dรผrften aber vermutlich die meisten Kisten inzwischen schaffen, oder?
Hat jemand Tipps und Empfehlungen, welche Modelle man getrost nรคher in den Blick nehmen darf oder um welche man lieber einen Bogen machen sollte?
Hi, apologies for the spam wave we just had. We blocked all users responsible (79 of them!) and restricted sign-ups until we think it's good to un-restrict them.
Other instance admins: I recommend blocking the email domain chitthi.in and temporarily limit sign-ups from 185.220.101.0/24 so it doesn't happen to you as well.
