Do you use emoji in your written feedback? I love the clarity of symbolic emojis for communicating tone in feedback!

For written feedback I include:
❇️ for appreciation or strengths
❇️📈 for incremental growth (aka, all is green, and here's how to expand your impact)
✴️ / ⏸️ for constructive feedback on something to change
⚠️ for cautions on upcoming things to be aware of while things are still going well
❇️🔁 for reiterating feedback to emphasize valuable things to continue
✴️🔁 for reiterating concerns to emphasize behaviors that haven't changed that remain a concern, reminding them to please keep working on that.

Symbolic emoji help folks distinguish "this needs to change" from "maybe consider this growth idea but I'd be happy with your work regardless"

I just went on a follow-fest for women with a PhD, but realized I'm already mutuals with almost everyone who shows up in the limited search results 😋

If you're a Dr. Gal or other female science communicator type, pop into the thread, say hi!

I'd love to learn about what you do 💜
(and I'm sure lots of others would too)

"Compared to short flights without masking, medium and long flights without masking were associated with 4.66-fold increase (95% CI: [1.01, 21.52]; p < 0.0001) and 25.93-fold increase in incidence rates (95% CI: [4.1, 164]; p < 0.0001), respectively; long flights with enforced masking had no transmission reported. A 1 h increase in flight duration was associated with 1.53-fold (95% CI: [1.19, 1.66]; p < 0.001) increase in the incidence rate ratio (IRR) of cases. Masking should be considered for long flights"

Except there's often a bigger bully who won't stop, and you can't fight ostracism by fighting dirty or physically, particularly as a young girl

Having a group that stands up for each other is effective, so long as that group retains some retaliatory power to protect individuals away from the group

Why do people like this book!? This is the THIRD edition (2015, 1ed 1983) of High Output Management. Please explain how writing like this gets published.

The lack of OSINT & OpSec self-defense capabilities in Mastodon bothers me.

If I wanted to stem the tide of a growing wave of harassment/abuse, I have no ability to search for where it might be happening across the Fediverse.

The primary non-technical arguments against search are about random drive-by harassment by name-/keyword-searchers. That's spammy behavior that can be addressed at scale by a centralized moderation team.

On the other hand, I have no ability to keep tabs on whether organized harassment against me is escalating minimally or severely until it hits me. Hopefully not literally—but physical attacks have to be in the threat model, and I'd prefer to have SOME idea about what threat actors are out there and what their goals are.

These are yet more concerns that point to Mastodon not currently being an effective platform for protecting and supporting marginalized communities at scale. Maybe it could be in the future, or maybe it's just not what we need for 2025+.
