I still like "anti fascist action" but I'm a little bummed it doesn't involve feeding anyone to ants.

UPDATE: NY Governor Kathy Hochul said on CNN last night that she is considering a ban on masks.

This is absolutely shameful! New York has suffered so much from COVID, and COVID is not over. We should be normalizing and depoliticizing masks, not banning them.

@luckytran I need a long read on NY politics & some context on how they consistently elect the most dogshit governors & NYC mayors. I just know it's gotta be some fascinating pathology at work.

@futurebird love your posts. I watched an uprooted anthill reorganize itself yesterday. Fascinating to watch how they organized to save their eggs and pupae and get them to a safe place nearly two feet away in a hole in a wall. Unfortunately I doubt the queen was with them and I wonder can they make a new one and rebuild the colony. Big black ants.

@futurebird @MonarchLady I rescued a big ol Camponotus queen out of a bowl of water the other day. She seemed silly.

Taught my CS how to program a mandelbrot set generator from scratch today.

Still don't have the colors doing exactly the right thing. This is in python, but we'll sort it out in the next class.

The most annoying thing is making the magnitudes of the terms in the series into a number between 0 and 256 without knowing exactly how big they will get.

I need to find my old James Gleick book.

@futurebird I think that's often done using a modulo operation instead of normalizing the values. Interesting to try both ways!

I think most people are writing the rabbit r1 by Teenage Engineering as "another AI no one asked for" that might be true... HOWEVER LAM "Large Action Model" sounds interesting. An assistant to be able to use apps, not use APIs... literally use the apps by clicking buttons & such. But, the reason it sounds interesting is that fleeting hope it might, at long last, help me to avoid the little UI bugs/failings that drive me nuts in many apps.

Which begs the question: why not just fix the UIs? 1/

@futurebird @mattmcirvin that would be a huge, expensive rearchitrcture of the cloud and Internet infrastructure, but would ultimately be good for security too. Much easier to say "sorry Mx Hacker, I can't send that data to your server" when you have a clearly defined authorization of which data can go to which servers and enforce that at multiple layers.

I keep seeing these discussions in left circles about how terrible social media is. It angers & frustrates me that Mastodon & the Fediverse don't even merit a mention.

"The Majority Report" goes as far as dissing Threads but never mentions the fedi.

There are only 170 comments. Why not leave a comment asking why "the left" keeps complaining (rightly) about corporate social media but ignoring the alternative?

@futurebird a lot of those I don't like because they're too general. People already say "public spaces," etc all the time. Feels especially weird to imagine asking somebody "are you on public space?" It would make people wonder if you're having a stroke

A Bitcoin investor was recently scammed out of 9 Bitcoin (worth around $490K) in a fake “Exodus wallet” desktop application for Linux, published in the Canonical Snap Store. This isn’t the first time; if nothing changes, it likely won’t be the last.

This is a rather long blog post to accompany @linuxmatters episode 23.

The more I learn about light pollution harms insects, the more I want to try to help... do something about it.

But I live in NYC. It feels like an impossible ask. A whole city devoted to making the most light pollution possible.

I strongly suspect that we'd see a greater variety of wildlife if we could dim the light a little.

Just using colors like red light can help. So can dark hours and motion sensors.

What if one day, as a treat, every New Yorker got to see the milky way?

@futurebird plus, imagine the opportunities for horror! You rest under a warm light on a bench, when a block away another light flickers on. You don't see anyone walking, but one after another, the lights approaching your seat turn bright, until only one remains dark, the one above the alley beside your bench…
