Some one asked in DM how to identify ants. So here is my method:

The best resource online is

https://www.inaturalist.org/

This is an effectively peer-reviewed database of correctly identified photos of insects.

To identify an ant search for "ants" then set your region to the location where you saw the ant. Look through the photos until you see a match.

@futurebird @econads @CliftonR It could also be the materials - synthetic textiles tend to get stinky faster / in a different way. Nutritional and lifestyle habits also play a role.

So of ya'll talk about "reply guys" on Mastodon. And yeah that exists, but it's like the least annoying of the gruesome menagerie I used to deal with every day on X social media.

There were:

  • Stalker
  • Mr. Race Science
  • Always Wrong, Thinks He's Right
  • Mr. I'm Making This About Politics
  • Ms. Gender(ing everyone for no reason)
  • Mr. Just Plain Racist
  • Mr. I thought I blocked you?
  • Mr. "I know where you work"

and on and on

rubinjoni ,
@rubinjoni@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird @tob @Naich Well, the latest discourse here is that replying is a problematic behavior that needs to be regulated at scale.

I decided to find out if any progress had been made on the science behind why some ants are attracted to electrical fields. After filtering out exterminators (it's so demoralizing to search for information on creatures you love and find nothing but people who know nothing about them boasting about how they will kill them all) I found what looked like a blog. But, who the heck is "James Brown"? Never heard of the dude. Maybe he could be my new friend if he likes ants enough to blog about them!

@futurebird @medley56 @wmd Are you aware of the (now retracted, fortunately) scientific paper with AI generated illustrations of absurdly large rat genitalia? It was making rounds on the Fediverse a few months ago. Scientific publishing was already severely flawed before AI slop generation became a thing, and it's going further down the spiral. It really boils down to personal reputation, which also has it's flaws.

Infinite scroll is a blessing and a curse, combined with algorithms, they can become quite addictive.

That is the whole point of developing a project right, for people to actually use it, and the most possible?

I know, there are detriments to encouraging excessive use, but we shouldn't ignore the fact that algorithms and infinite scroll are here to stay.

The question with @loops is, how we can encourage the most healthy use?

You have to carefully read this Axios piece -- on the rise of "partisan-backed outlets designed to look like impartial news outlets" -- to learn what should have been shouted right at the top: The overwhelming majority of these "pink slime" sites are engineered by right-wingers.

With that context firmly in your mind, do read it.

In Vox, I explained why small business owners consistently exaggerate the share of customers who drive, undercounting those who bike, walk, or ride transit.

Merchants' pro-car bias leads them to fight critical policies like NYC congestion pricing as well as dedicated lanes for bikes and buses -- moves that could boost their bottom line.

Lost in all the jokes about "I'd rather be electrocuted than eaten by a shark." -Trump

(It's right up there with "But let me tell you something that I found out: A werewolf can kill a vampire. Did you know that? I never knew that." - Herschel Walker Ah, yes, Republican wisdom!)

But lost in all the kerfuffle was another curious comment from Trump about sharks:

"I watched some guys justifying it ... They bit off the young lady’s leg ... These people are crazy."

So, about THAT. 1/

The major flaw I see in left-wing (think coops) anarchism is the simple fact that wielding power is still work. There is an implicit assumption that the freedom to be your own boss, set your own rules, shape the future of the organizations you participate in is its own reward.

It can be. But, it's also work, toil, labor, that which must be compensated or fall to corruption.

Too many anarchist ideas of how, for example, a small town might work require a population filled with busy bodies.

rubinjoni ,
@rubinjoni@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird Also, even fully self owned and self organized businesses (and coops are businesses) exist to market some product or service. They can be nonexploitative on the inside, but without a system to very tightly regulate the market they are coerced to behave like any other company marketing the same stuff. In other words, they must remain competitive with exploitation based businesses.

Why is it that the worst tasks: the ones I want to do the least are things that take like 17min tops to complete— but I think about how I haven’t done them — oh no no just can’t bear to do them for 30min a day for two weeks?

For me, at least, a task is odious if it may cause me to find out bad news that produces more tasks, if it involves forms, if it involves talking to people on the phone, especially someone I don’t know (what if they are mean to me? 😫)

It’s not THAT bad. Is it?

Its always remarkable to me to think about Descartes and Galileo being contemporaries: so we know how the former reacted when the latter was imprisoned:

“I inquired in Leiden and Amsterdam whether Galileo’s World System was available, … I was told that it had indeed been published but that all the copies had immediately been burnt at Rome, and that Galileo had been convicted and fined. I was so astonished at this that I almost decided to burn all my papers … .”

I’m very fond of stories in a universe where some advanced, but long vanished, race of enigmatic aliens has left behind strange artifacts: like puzzle boxes or dungeons for our heroes to explore and nearly get killed in. If not aliens let it be a lost human civilization.

I also like to think about those ancient people who built the ‘Temple of Doom’— for all of those traps to work so well after thousands of years they must have been very clever. What was it like to set them up?

rubinjoni ,
@rubinjoni@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird But, the traps don't work so well - the main characters always defeat them (somehow).
