Have you tried a Decentralization Social-Media Network OTHER THAN THE FEDIVERSE?

(Ex: bluesky, farcaster, lens-protocol, nostr, etc?)

If "yes", which ones?

It's been 6 months since Meta laid out their plan for "end of the year full federation".

It's wild to me that, in that same timeframe, a solo third party dev was able to get BlueSky pretty much fully federated before Threads could. Bridgy Fed dev doesn't even work for Bluesky or Threads and he managed to bridge Fediverse AND threads to BlueSky.

I feel embarrassed FOR Meta at this point. What the hell is taking them so long?

I worked for a couple of very large corporations in the past.

My experience was — they tend to be very slow moving. Very very slow moving.

I have heard similar from friends who worked at other very large corporations.

The definition of "Fediverse" seems to be expanding.

"Federated social networks, collectively known as the "fediverse," are emerging as a promising alternative to centralized social media platforms. These networks, such as Mastodon, Threads, and BlueSky, offer a decentralized approach to online interaction."

To ALL my followers and mutuals:

This weekend is WrestleMania weekend.

I am very excited. However, I know most of you don't follow me for that.

Therefore, I'm giving you a heads up! I will be using the following hashtags a LOT over the course of the weekend and it WILL contain spoilers.

I was really into Wrestling starting back in the early 1980s.

I haven't watched it in decades.

I wonder how many of the characters I remember are still there.

I imagine many of them have retired.

I know some of my favorites have even passed away 🙁

So far, only 2,800 Threads accounts have turned on Federation. Of the ones I see, they’re quite active.

I suspect the reason for the minuscule federated accounts is because Threads users can’t see replies from the Fediverse yet. Why would you turn on federation if you’re oblivious to interactions from the Fediverse?

Nevertheless, we’ll see what happens once communication becomes two-way.

There are also quite a number of steps to turn on federation for a Threads account.

I was curious how a Threads account shows up on the Fediverse.

I have seen Threads users on the Fediverse — but I noticed that when I tried looking up many people, they didn't show up.

Later, I saw mention of Threads users having to enable Fediverse.

This is how a Threads user turns on "Fediverse sharing" on their Threads account.

🧵

@reiver@mastodon.social avatar

2/

Step №1:

Go to your Threads profile.

Then tap the icon in the top-right with the 2 horizontal lines — that will take you to the Threads app 'Settings'.

.

@reiver@mastodon.social avatar

3/

Step №2:

On the Threads app 'Settings' screen, tap 'Account' — that will take you to the 'Account' screen.

.

4/

Step №3:

On the Threads app 'Account' screen, tap 'Fediverse sharing' — that will take you to the 'What is the Fediverse' screen.

(Note that the 'Fediverse sharing' option didn't show up for me last time I checked. Today is the first time I saw it there. YMMV.)

.

reiver OP ,
@reiver@mastodon.social avatar

5/

Step №4:

The Threads app will require you to scroll down on the 'What is the fediverse' screen.

Once you do that, the inactive button (near the bottom of the screen) that previously said 'Scroll to continue' will become active and say 'Next'.

Tap the 'Next' button to be taken to a 'Turn on fediverse sharing?' screen.

.

Step №5:

On the Threads 'Turn on fediverse sharing?' screen, tap the 'Turn on sharing' button near the bottom of the screen.

And —

reiver OP ,
@reiver@mastodon.social avatar

7/

If that was successful, then the Threads app should take you back to the 'Account' screen.

But where before 'Fediverse sharing' said 'Off', now it should say 'On'.

And now for the-moment-of-truth — will looking up my Threads account from Mastodon work‽

Yes! Yes, it does.

FOLLOW-UP №2:

When I try to look up my Mastodon account from the Threads app, it doesn't seem to work.

Ugh. I wish Fedi wasn't so reliant on domains....

Back when my naive self started Fedi, I went with the most known software (mastodon). But after months of dev incompetence, it's obviously not where I want to be, but I like my domain....

I guess I'm basically stuck with all these bad UI updates and no moderation features....😬🤦‍♂️

reiver ,
@reiver@mastodon.social avatar

@BeAware

That is one of my criticism, too — that identify on the Fediverse is tied to an Internet domain.

The Web and the Internet are largely ephemeral — documents, images, and videos disappear all the time.

If you find something on the Web or the Internet and you value it — download it and save it.
